When you visit a place like New York, you can’t help but be heart-broken when you leave. It really is a place where dreams are made. I went out there with my girlfriend as I had to do some recording and decided to take a few snaps whilst I was there. I think in 9 days I took about 900 photographs! I just couldn’t get enough.

The picture you see above is the cliche ‘Time Square’ shot, although I tried to give it a bit of character. By shooting with the flash, using a slower shutter speed (1/8) and pulling back the zoom as a released the shutter, I got a more interesting scope on this overly-shot location in New York.

Wall Street, Canon 1DS 1/800 f/8

I took this shot as I wondered up Wall Street drinking a melon smoothie, which I thought was going to be delicious but actually, to my disappointment turned out to be quite revolting. Before I went to New York I had always imagined a shot of steam rising from the street, something that I had always pictured whenever I thought about The Big Apple as a child. The sun was peeking through one of the buildings to my left and created this amazing reflection on the steam rising from a nearby manhole. If I’m honest this shot was more of an under-exposed fluke than a work of art, but I’m happy with it and after all, nobody else has to know that!

Subway Steps, Canon 1DS 1/200 f/4

This is actually one of those shots that you take, look at and think, ‘I must delete that later’, but then get home and upon inspection grow to like it. Now I love this shot. My girlfriend and I were wandering up the steps of the subway somewhere around the East Village when I spotted this guy stood at the top of the stairs. I shot this from the hip so not to disturb him and sort of fluked the composition. I love the dark feel of this shot, there is something scary about it, I can imagine it as a scene in a thriller where perhaps the guy in the white shirt is waiting for his next victim. I don’t know, maybe...

I’ve got those Manhattan Blues...
