CASTING IDEAS

1.1  Unofficial Cast  Zabriskie

1.2  Unofficial Cast  Conroy

STATISTICS OF AUTISM:

Autism occurs in 1 in every 150 children born in the US.

It is estimated that  1.5 million in the US have Autism.

A new case of Autism is diagnosed every 20 minutes.

Autism  strikes boys more than girls – roughly 4 times more common in boys. With statistics being 1 in every 150 children that makes it 1 in every 94 males.

24,000 new cases diagnosed in the US each year.

Autism receives <5% of the research funding compared to many less prevalent childhood diseases.

Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the US (10 – 17%).

The costs of lifelong care for autism can be reduced by 2/3 through early diagnosis and intervention.

90% of people with Autism of working age are unemployed.

TREND IN AUTISM:

NORMAL FOLK IS MORE THAN JUST A MOVIE THAT DEALS WITH AUTISM

“Normal Folk is not a movie about autism.  It is a movie about love, and second chances in life.  Like “Away from Her”, it is not about an ailment, per say, it is about how we deal with it, and how it effects our lives. How do we know autism and Asperger Syndrome are a timely topic?

18 MILLION HITS ON WEB

The worldwide web gives you 18 million hits on autism.  There is a hunger for information.  A number of people have the idea that people with autism are so profoundly affected that they can't talk. If they are talkers, many assume that they converse like Dustin Hoffman's character in "Rain Man." But autism involves a wide spectrum. Asperger's Syndrome is an autistic disorder that is at the high-functioning end of the spectrum.

Many refer to those who have Asperger's Syndrome as having a "dash" of autism, or "mild" autism. However, there is nothing mild about this syndrome. Many children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) at an early age have been misdiagnosed. Rather, they should have received the diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome.

AUTISM IS AN EPIDEMIC

Current news calls autism an epidemic.

The Centers for Disease Control has determined that autism in its wide-ranging forms is the epidemic of our time.  Not since polio in the '40s and early '50s, has there been such a thrust to address a health issue.

1/150 CHILDREN HAVE AUTISM

Parents today are told 1 in 150 children will have autism.

Approximately one in every 150 children in the United States has autism or a closely related disorder - a figure higher than most recent estimates -- according to a federal survey released yesterday, the most thorough ever conducted.

But the sheer number of children apparently affected -- 560,000 nationwide if the new statistics are extrapolated to all 50 states - makes autism an "urgent public health issue" and a "major public health concern," said Marshalyn Yeargin-Allsopp, chief of the developmental disabilities branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which conducted the survey.

OLDER PARENTS MORE PRONE

Statistics say older parents are more prone to having autistic children. NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Advanced maternal age and paternal age are both risk factors for having a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a large study indicates. Findings support a link between advanced (parental) age and autism, although the effect on risk is small.

PROVEN SCRIPT

With literally zero direction on my part, 15 fantastic actors showed up at my home on a Monday night.  Well, they didn’t just show up. I didn’t beg them either.  Over the last few weeks, phone calls and script deliveries happened all over town. Follow up phone conversations and emails sealed the deals, and in the 11th hour, my table reading cast was in place.  To express my deepest gratitude, I grilled some chicken  and poured some wine and after an hour of catch up with everyone, we dove into the story.  Reading the stage direction was the talented screenwriter and director Morgan O’Neil. Volunteering their time and energy was a fabulous actor ensemble, including the likes of Grace Zabriskie, James Karen, Zelda Rubinstein, Mindy Sterling, Tim Bagley, Janet Ladd-Ryan, Suzanne Friedline, Chris Showerman, Stephen DeCordova, Judy Heneghan, and Mirai Booth-Ong.

Celebrated actors come together to read the script.

APPENDIX 3

350,000 SUPPORTERS FOR NORMAL FOLK

The site hosts a running narrative of the making of the film, describing milestones, challenges and progress. Streeter’s last film, the film’s web presence serves as a tool for filmmakers and interested supporters alike to follow the journey of making this very important film, understanding its audience, and branding “Normal Folk” years before its release.

The site also facilitates and hosts activists, writers, professionals in autism and parents alike, to debate and share their opinion and support for the efforts of the filmmaker. Today, Normalfolk.com draws an average of 1000 hits after announcing new blog entries. Our internet presence serves as an interest barometer as well as a subset of the general audience to consider in final marketing strategies.

Normal Folk also enjoys a following on YouTube, featuring the Marty Murphy public speaking video, now viewed by over 6400 members. CagesMovie.com, Streeter’s previous feature film project enjoyed an average 19,000 hits daily the week of premier in Singapore.

VIRAL WEBSITE MINIDOCS (Segmented clips)

In addition, the project feeds and fuels interactive forums on YouTube, Zannel, and MySpace, along with controversial content on www.normalfolk.com engaging in the on-going and divided debate within the ever growing autism community as to whether one should “cure autism” or embrace “pro autism”. With the statistics being 1 in 166 children being diagnosed with autism today, the number of children directly affected by autism is estimated at 1.8 million people, concluding there are more than 7 million people directly effected by autism today.

APPENDIX 5

INTERNATIONAL/REGIONAL SUPPORT - WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY 2009

Streeter’s new film deals with autism.  One of the most rapidly growing issues in our society today, Streeter plans to shut down film production in the middle of the shoot to celebrate Autism Awareness in the community and thank locals for being so patient while shooting in the old downtown area.

Anticipating an Oscar Winning cast, in association to the feature film and documentary and the introduction of first-time local actor Marty Murphy who is slated to be in the film (born and raised in Normal and has autism), Streeter and his celebrity cast, crew and local supporters are expected to stop filming to come together to raise money for the Autism Society of Mclean County on April 2 – World Autism Awareness Day 2009 in Normal Illinois.

Graham’s previous feature film, Cages, was shot entirely in Singapore, and the cast and crew stopped their daily routine to raise money for the Singapore School for the Visually Impaired.  During the local 45-day shoot, a day-long fund raising event was organized on behalf of the school where funds were raised in the name of first-time blind child actor Dickson Tan who appeared in the film.

APPENDIX 6

NATIONAL AND LOCAL SUPPORT - STREETER PARTNERS WITH MAYOR KOOS, NORMAL ILLINOIS

In addition to regional and international support, Normal Folk will harness relationship with nationally recognized organizations that serve as the forerunners in autism support. Amongst the biggest are Autism Speaks, Cure Autism Now, Defeat Autism Now, and The Autism Society of America.  A closer look at any of them describes the scale of support we are expected to partner with nationally.

Over the last 40 years, the Autism Society of America has grown from a handful of parents, into the leading source of information, research, and reference on autism. ASA is the oldest and largest grassroots organization within the autism community.

Today, more than 120,000 members and supporters are connected through a working network of nearly 200 chapters nationwide.

APPENDIX 7

Graham Streeter (Writer/Director)

Director/Screenwriter Graham Streeter prepares up for his next feature film NORMAL FOLK, a drama that deals with second chances in life.  Pivoting around a 65-year old woman EDDIE and her estranged autistic relative, DORA, the journey celebrates love and acceptance when challenged by life’s unexpected gifts.

Streeter has not yet announced the film’s all-star cast, but helping him in the development of the main autistic character will be autistic speaker Marty Murphy.  Streeter, after writing the screenplay, discovered Marty in her home town of Normal Illinois by chance, and decided to model the autistic character after her own unique autistic characteristics some 6 years prior, when her coping skills were not as refined as they are today.

APPENDIX 8

Roger Bourland,

Composer, 70 Piece Orchestral Score

From the score of CAGES, Normal Folk welcomes Roger as he prepares for an original full-length feature score and overture for Normal Folk with the award-winning 70-piece UCLA Philharmonia.

Bourland says “Having lived in the midwest, I know the SOUND of this film. The crickets, the cicada, the wind, the crunching of the snow, the sound of fire outside on a cold night, and rustling of the leaves. There is a long phrase over Graham’s story. Not that it will be wall to wall music, but the music will come and go, gently.” Roger Bourland continues, “I hear a harmonica, but I don't want one in the score.two main actors will have their own sound world, not necessarily tunes.lines like the big sky. Long tones like the long clouds on the horizon of the Illinois sunset.”

Roger received his education from the University of Wisconsin/Madison (B.Mus), the New England Conservatory of Music (M.M.), and Harvard University (A.M., Ph.D.). His teachers have included Leon Kirchner, Gunther Schuller, Donald Martino, John Harbison, and Randall Thompson. He received the Koussevitzky Prize in Composition at Tanglewood, the John Knowles Paine Fellowship at Harvard, two ASCAP Grants to Young Composers, numerous Meet the Composers grants, and was a co-founder of the Boston-based consortium "Composers in Red Sneakers." Roger has composed over one hundred works for all media: solo, instrumental, chamber, vocal and choral music, electro-acoustic music, and music for orchestra

Professor Roger Bourland currently resides as Chair of the UCLA Department of Music. As an administrator at UCLA, he served as the Chair of the Committee on Committees (1997-98, and 2001 - 2004), and the Chair of the Faculty Executive Committee in the Arts (5yrs).

APPENDIX 9

Volker Bertelmann, aka Hauschka,

Prepared Piano Solo Instrumentalist

German composer Volker Bertelmann explores the possibilities of the prepared piano on his debut for FatCat, Room To Expand. In an ever expanding genre of composers with a cinematic scope, Bertelmann adds an element of uncontrolled disarray to his beautiful vignettes that brim with candid emotion. Like realizing for the first time that routine has become you, the pieces reveal the layers underneath the piano's perfect surface. The pieces themselves expressive and quirky; begin to feel worn by blips and odd clunks of hammers hitting clamps and decisively placed bits of leather strapping. The mellifluous plinking of piano keys begins to unravel into frailty. The alternately sprightly and somber pieces rattle and buzz until you can fairly peel away the layers of false pretense exposing the shaky and worn truth beneath.
