The time between the first of the year and the beginning of spring can seem very long in Lauzerte. Cultural activities are few and far between when the weather is cold and dark here, and one’s instincts are to hunker down at home and want until spring arrives. (It didn’t bode well that the Punxsutawney Phil, the iconic groundhog in Pennysylvania, saw his shadow on February 2nd, heralding another 6 weeks of winter -- at least in the US.)
However, one warm, bright spot is “Le Puits de Jour”, a musical cafe and tapas bar on the town square. Its indefatigable owner, Mathieu, keeps the cafe open 6 days a week for those of us who like a comfortable place to socialize over coffee in the morning. More significantly, he also manages to program monthly art exhibits and live music on the weekends all year round. He just published the schedule of musical evenings over the next 3 months and it is remarkable for its diversity (and hopefully for its quality.
For those who thinks he only has a taste for rock music, Mathieu also offers jazz, folks songs, and blues in February...
....piano, modern jazz, and percussion in March...
..and some salsa, chansons, and Afrofolk in April.
His offerings for this period culminate in a 3-day festival of live rock at the end of April on the town square; by then the warm weather has returned, and we are grateful for Mathieu’s part in making the time go by faster. Check out his page MySpace.com/lepuitsdejour which has more information on these and other upcoming musical events. Make your way to Le Puits and shake off your winter doldrums.
