Bob Carls is a full-time studio artist who creates functional and decorative lathe-turned and carved wood vessels.

"My work focuses on function or implied function, acknowledging the history of the vessel.
My work is drawn from my personal experience and value system, and strives for continuity,
historical context and a high level of workmanship. I am challenged by creating forms with wood
that involve craftsmanship of chance rather than craftsmanship of certainty.”

“The wood vessel becomes a vehicle through which I attempt to connect with my own human experience.”

-Bob Carls

Bob brings to his work a lifetime of study in art forms that range from improvisational music to the visual arts, especially photography, sculpture and film. Bob's turned woods vessels can be found in the permanent collections of the Minnesota State Historical Society, St. Paul; Waterloo Art Museum, Waterloo, IA; Waage Art Center, Fergus Falls; and corporate and private collections worldwide. Bob and his wife, Amy Sharpe, own and operate Ripple River Gallery near Bay Lake, Minn.
