On the morning of Saturday, September 23rd, two friends and I waited outside the Providence Place Mall at 2am to make sure we were the first ones in the store. It was about 60 degrees, a little chilly, but we stayed warm with fun conversation and several episodes of The Office on my iBook. Finally, a security guard came to tell us we could go in about 5:30.
We were placed behind a stanchion, and waited some more. A bunch of us Apple fanpeople were there, playing on our laptops, using the store’s slow wifi, and talking about the recent announcements. My roommate came by with McDonald’s breakfasts and coffee for us around 6:30.
At about 9:00am, NBC 10 news came with a camera to film the line and the opening. When they asked who was there first, everyone pointed at me. Here was the result on the six-o’clock news:
That was a lot of fun, and a little weird. Since that day, I’ve been in the store for a Mac Genius session to speed up my laptop and two workshops. Every time I go in there, I feel like a little mini-celebrity; they all remember me, and many had their pictures taken with me. It’s great fun.
I really, really want to work there. Even though it’s a retail store, they pay well, and they just love their jobs. I’ve got to get in there.
