The Rules of Hydration

Golf For Women May/June 2008

Dehydration can impair your mental function and cause fatigue, resulting in poor

concentration and higher scores. If you need a quick hit of energy, reach for a sports

drink---a good supply of simple carbs--- over a bar.  Here are the basic rules,

according to the American College of Sports Medicine, for replenishing during any

outing, whether you are playing golf or tennis.

How much you sweat, and therefore how much fluid you need, depends on such

variables as temperature, humidity, altitude, the clothing you have on and your

    exertion level.

You should drink before you get thirsty.  How much?  You’ll probably have to hit

the rest room every two to four hours, and “your urine should be light yellow or

clear in color.”  Otherwise you are not drinking enough.  If you wait until you are

thirsty, you might already be dehydrated.
