Seagull road signs

Word of advice when paddling -- if you see seagulls standing in the water, you can’t paddle there.

Today’s river trip took me to familar ground...er, water--the Nehalem River/Bay area, departing from the Wheeler dock. All aboard! There’s a circle tour you can make that encompasses both the river and the bay. In fact, I’m not exactly clear where one starts and the other ends but it’s all connected regardless. (Some of you long-time readers may remember this map - the red route is what I was repeating today.)  The back channel is very tidal so attention to the timing of high tide is crucial, otherwise, it’s a mud flat. I was a little ahead of the high tide mark so picking your way through water deep enough to keep moving was a bit challenging. However, I noticed of lot of seagulls standing in the water around me. Hey, if they’re standing, they’re only in an inch of water! So being the keen explorer that I am, not unlike Lewis and Clark I would imagine, I simply paddled where the seagulls weren’t. I used them like highway makers on the side of the road and paddled between them. Worked like a charm.

The video above was a spur-of-the moment experiment to see if I could video myself paddling and not lose the camera overboard. I couldn’t find a reliable way to point the camera higher but trust me, it was not a stunt double. Kids don’t try this at home.
