This weekend’s project involved ripping into the kitchen floor bigtime. We currently have a 3x8 foot hole, soon to be about a 3x12 hole. You could too! All you need is a circular saw and a prybar. C’mon kids, try it! It’s fun!
So obviously, your next question is what kind of wacky weather is Portland having? Well, I’ll tell you about our weekend snow after I finishing telling you about the big hole in our kitchen. You see, there’s been a problem with the floor, or at least a portion of it, ever since the house was built. Sure, we’ve lived with it for 18 years but now it’s time to correct matters. One floor joist, the one that runs right down the middle of our kitchen, is just a little bit higher than all the other joists. This causes a small hump in the floor. Not a big speed bump, but noticeable just the same.
The original residents (Joan’s folks) just put carpet over the hump and disregarded its existence. We pulled up the carpet when we moved in and replaced it a wood floor. Oh, the hump was still there but we at least acknowledged it. We just chose to do nothing about it at the time (we were so young). But times have changed. In preparation for a new floor, the wrongs must be righted. That’s when the fun began! Power tools, sawdust flying everywhere...and I’m not even done! I need to uncover the length of the joist, and then plane it down so that it’s level with the adjacent joists. Fortunately, directly underneath the kitchen is my shop area in an unfinished area of the basement. That area is already used to lots of sawdust and debris. It should also be perfect for capturing wayward tigers or lions. I simply spread branches and leaves over the hole in the kitchen, and then when the elephant, bear, or whatever big game wanders through....WHOOSH! Captured! I’ve seen it done hundreds of times in movies. I can’t see any downside to this plan.
