The long Independence weekend was spent at the beach with assorted family members and pets. Turns out, we’re still pretty dependent on some things...like plumbing. In this case, the drains decided to back up. Oh, they had good reason to. In an old sagging beach house, pipes tend to run uphill. [Editor’s Note: See Oregon Vortex or Santa Cruz Mystery Spot]. This is not a good idea if you happen to be a drain pipe. You’re supposed to go downhill, hence the name DRAIN pipe. My brother-in-law and I spent a portion of two days under the house investigating, then acting on the situation. The “immediate” fix was to cut out the section of pipe where the inappropriate transition of downhill to uphill took place, clean out the “gunk” (a technical term), run a snake in all directions of accessible pipe, and then reattach the pipe. Problem solved! For now. The long-term fix is to build a new beach house.
Other than being all bent up in a dark and spooky place, the weekend was very enjoyable with a couple of bonfires on the beach, fireworks (both official and equally impressive unofficial), and some quality napping time on the deck.
