There are no major concentrations of easily-viewable bears near Haines and Skagway. However, with care and patience, scattered bears can often be seen in the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, where bruins and eagles are both drawn by enormous runs of salmon, including a heavy run during August and September. Access is easiest between Haines and the Canadian border, where the road closely parallels the Chilkat River.
