The town of Kodiak provides access to several fine viewing sites on Kodiak Island itself -- mostly in the region of Karluk Lake. This island is home to a large population of brown bears, some of enormous size -- the infamous Kodiak Brown bears. From Kodiak, some people fly to the village of Larsen Bay, then make the last leg of travel to a viewing site in a smaller plane or by boat or foot.
Kodiak community is also a gateway to Katmai National Park, on the Alaska Peninsula. Separating the island from the peninsula is Shelikof Strait, little wider than the English Channel, but with some of the fiercest winter weather in North America, as a few awesome summer storms each year. For any given age and sex, Katmai bears are as densely populated and as large as those on Kodiak; however protection of Katmai bears from hunting has left that population with a much higher proportion of prime boars in excess of 1000 pounds -- which is, you might say, one heck of a lot of bruin.
