Is It Only a Myth That Mother Bears Spank Their Cubs?
Saturday, January 27, 2007
Steve Stringham

One commonly reads about mother bears swatting their cubs, sometimes so hard that the youngsters go flying.  I’ve also heard people talking about such sightings.  However, everyone

YOUR COMMENTS
This is your opportunity to share with fellow viewers your experiences with bears or your responses to material on (or missing from) Bear Viewing Association webpages.

Please limit each submission to no more than 800 words.  Although some viewer entries may be retained on the active blog or in our archives, others may be erased after 30 days, at BVA’s sole discretion.

YOUR PHOTOS
You may post up to 5 photos of no more than 200 KB each.  These may be posted to the blog or, possibly, to BVA’s photo gallery.  BVA retains the right to erase photos after 30 days (because of our space limitations) or if their content is inappropriate.

If you have problems posting a photo on our blog, send it as a .jpg or .png file to BVA at gobearviewing@hotmail.com.  Add a note stating that you are the copyright holder and that you “give BVA your permission to post it on any BVA website.”

YOUR COPYRIGHT
To retain copyright on any comments or photos you submit, type the date the photo or comment was made, followed by your name.
e.g., ”(c) 1997 S. Jackson

POSTING YOUR COMMENT OR PHOTO
As you probably know, a blog differs from a  bulletin board where you have full freedom for your postings.  In a blog, you cannot start a new topic category -- only comment in an existing category.  Please post your comments on the most appropriate blog (see menu at the top of this page).  To give readers maximum flexibility, we are adding new topic blogs as quickly as readers ask for them.  If you would like to start discussion on a new topic (e.g., in response to material on a BVA website), post a comment to that effect on THIS webpage.   Comments on other topics should be added to the appropriate blog

Each blog entry should begin with your
TITLE (capitalized and bolded):
(e.g., SOW BROWN BEAR SPANKS CUB)
Date of your experience  (e.g., June 5, 2006)
Location of your experience (e.g., Head of Karluk River on Kodiak Island)
Under “Comment As” give your name or webName (e.g., Tenn Bear Tracker)
Under “URL” give your email address (e.g., TBT@aol.com)
In the “Comment” box, you may list our website URL if you want our readers to surf it -- but ONLY if it is directly relevant to viewing bears or other wildlife, bear research, bear conservation, species at high risk, bear safety, or wildlife photography.  You may also give the URL for any related video material you have posted on the web, for instance at Google Video or YouTube.

If you are responding to comments by someone else, put Responding to:” then list the title and date of that comment.  (e.g., Responding to:  IS IT ONLY A MYTH THAT MOTHER BEARS SPANK THEIR CUBS? January 27, 2005).

OTHER DO’s and DON’Ts

You may submit only comments and/or photographs for which you are the legal copyright holder.  By submitting any material to this blog, you thereby give BVA permission to have it posted on this website or any other BVA website to which BVA, at its discretion, might wish to post it.  For example, photos or comments about a specific viewing site might be copied to a BVA bulletin board devoted to that site.  Likewise, comments about a specific vendor (e.g., tour company) might be copied to a bulletin board on that business.

BVA is highly interested in identifying vendors who are especially helpful to viewers and viewing opportunities that people particularly enjoy.  This information will help other viewers predict which sites, vendors, etc. are most likely or least likely to meet their needs.

Please, no spam or self-advertisement for your own business as a blog entry.  All self-advertisement should be posted as an advertisement on the appropriate webpage.  To submit an ad, contact BVA at gobearviewing@hotmail.com.

You may not submit comments that are libelous -- that defame any person or organization.  If you want to criticize any viewing vendor (e.g., guide or tour company or lodge) with whom you dealt during a viewing excursion, please be polite, respectful, and factual.

DISCLAIMER
BVA neither accepts nor assumes any liability for ensuring that any submitted material does not violate any law or any of the above rules, or for removing such violations from any BVA blog -- although we shall periodically scan for violations and remove those we can.

When you submit material to a BVA blog, you automatically thereby attest that your submission abides by all BVA policies.

At the discretion of BVA’s webmaster or another BVA officer, any violation by you of our policies will void your privilege for posting material to any and all BVA blogs, and will likely result in removal of your material from our blogs.

Advertisements of commercial products or services cannot be posted on a BVA blog.  They need to be added to the Viewing Vendors website, for which there is a nominal charge to help defray our expenses.  For details, read the Welcome page of the Viewing Vendors website, then contact BVA at gobearviewing@hotmail.com
