Protection From Sun and Bugs

If you are lucky enough to do your bear viewing during one of our occasional clear and warm days, you should also remember to bring sunblock and sunglasses, preferably with polarized lenses.

One of the most essential items, of course, is an adequate supply of bug dope -- preferably Industrial Strength. Alaska is famous not only for its mosquitoes but also its blackflies, white-socks, noseeums, and other little nasties.

Different bugs are repelled better by one kind of repellent than another, and while there’s no one brand that works against all bugs equally well, I like to carry Ben’s and / or Off. When browsing bug repellants, look for the active ingredient, Deet. Skin-So-Soft is also good. Beware that anything with a perfumed odor may be even more attractive to bears than it is to you.

In extreme cases, you may need a headnet. I carry one with a steel brim that rolls up into a small packet.
