THE WEEKLY

MESSAGE

Thursday, July 2, 2009

This Sunday we celebrate The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost. The appointed readings may be found here.

The church office will be closed on Friday, July 3 in observance of Independence Day.

Come see The Apostle, starring Robert Duvall, Farah Fawcett, and Billy Bob Thornton. This 1997 film, written and directed by Duvall, portrays the life of Euliss ‘Sonny’ Dewey, a charismatic preacher whose life dramatically demonstrates the conflict between being a man of God and a man of flesh. Taking on the role of a man both profoundly devout and yet deeply flawed, Duvall richly deserved the Oscar nomination he received for this remarkable movie. We will gather in the Parish House at 6:00 pm on Friday, July 10 for a brown-bag dinner. Following a screening of the movie, we’ll have a brief discussion of the issues raised.

Men’s Group will meet Tuesday, July 14 at 6 p.m.

Acolyte Practice will be held on Wednesday, July 15 at 5 p.m. All current acolytes -- and all who are interested in learning more about this ministry -- are welcome.

Does your car or truck let the world know you're an Episcopalian?  Episcopal Church stickers are now available in the office; get yours today!

Congrats to Alyson! It's official -- Alyson Johns-Robinson will be receiving her Masters of Arts degree from the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Memphis. And she completed her degree requirements even while relocating to Alaska. Congratulations, Alyson!

News from the O'Bryans: Fr. Gary received a letter from Glenn O'Bryan who reports that he and Jean have settled in to their new apartment at their daughter Dotty's house. Glenn notes that he has found a new church to attend, St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Hudson, about 20 minutes from their new home. He concludes his letter, writing, "Well, we have loved little St. Mary's for 19 years and miss our church friends."

Is There a Calendar of Events? Yes -- the online calendar for Saint Mary's is available here.
