Thanks for checking out SayNoToPlastic.co.uk, an eco movement set up by Heather Suttie in October 2007 to encourage us all to stop using plastic or poly bags.
If we all said no to plastic just once a day, we'd all be doing our bit for the environment.
One small change can start a revolution.
Of the estimated 17 billion bags given away in the UK each year, most are only used once and then thrown away. On average we use a plastic bag for 12 minutes before discarding it. The Environment Agency estimate that if everyone in the UK stopped using plastic bags and switched to using reusable bags, we would save enough plastic bags to tie around the earth 103 times!
The average plastic bag takes in excess of 300 years to break down. Bury a jute bag in your garden and it will be gone in 3 months.
Taiwan, Bangladesh, China, Denmark, Rwanda, Ireland, Switzerland, Germany and Holland are all doing their bit to tackle the problem. France, Australia, Spain, Italy, India, Kenya, Canada and Belgium are all working on a solution. Let's make Scotland the first country in Britain to stop using plastic bags!
Don't pay 5p or 10p for a plastic bag, take your own eco alternative that will last longer, carry more, be individual and most importantly will be so much better for the planet than toxic plastic ones.
BYOB and remember "change is in the bag!"
