An audience of 150 came out in wintry weather to enjoy a very special evening of music and memories when German cabaret artist Annett Boose presented an evening of songs and stories from the classic German films of the 30s and 40s. The program is entitled: “Davon geht die Welt nicht unter... von Zarah bis Leander” and was presented as a joint effort of the German Culture Center-UMSL and GOETHE-INSTITUT Chicago.
The program's title refers to Zarah Leander, the beautiful Swedish singer and actress who starred many German musical films. In 1942, she scored the two biggest hits of her recording career as she sang in her anthems of hope and survival; "Davon geht die Welt nicht unter" & "Ich weiß, es wird einmal ein Wunder gescheh'n".
Other songs in her nostalgic program included those made famous by Marlene Dietrich. Through these songs and others, Annette Boose recreated the mood and melodies of that bygone era, as he invited her audiences “to a world filled with longing and passion, to life somewhere between illusion and reality.”
