Background to the area. Lassithi Prefecture, described as the land of body and soul in Eastern Crete. It is after all,  is the southernmost part of Europe. Lasithi (alternate spelling) is steeped in 5000 years of history; its picturesque villages and towns contrast with renewable energy. It breathes olive groves and vineyards as far as the eye can see. It is also, the playground of Greece's rich and the international jet set on centred on Elounda and Agios Nikolaos.
 
And the first place you come to in Lasithi from Heraklion airport after a 35 minutes drive is the Municipality of Vrahassi  (aka Vrachasi ) which incorporates the upmarket coastal resorts of Milatos and Sissi.
 
Vrahassi proper lies at an elevation of 500m above sea level nestled in its own majestic valley with its own healthy micro-climate. It could not be more convenient  - just 1km off the main east-west highway and just 5km from sea, yet it is a world apart.  
 
The village has the basic necessities along with our famous restaurant  visited by royalty. There are of course a host of kafeneios (Greek coffee shops) to while away the day and catch up with village gossip. There are no less than 13 churches reflecting Vrahassi's rich past. This is a working village, for the most part by-passed by tourism. The 'foreign' local residents or summer holidaymakers are an eclectic bunch. But so far are just a handful of households and get along well with Vrahassians.
