Years ago I was approached by my friend Gabor Barabas, a pediatric neurologist in New Jersey who is also a published poet and playwright, to illustrate his poems about the holocaust entitled “Find Me a Voice”. I readily agreed, though I wanted less to just illustrate his already powerful poetry, but rather to add my own vision or “take” to the subject. He agreed.

I approached the project as a vehicle, originally, for printmaking, though I have since brought in various other mediums as well. The work, unfortunately, aside from a few small shots in interviews or one man shows, has not been published or put on view to any great extent. We never could find a publisher interested in putting the book out. Luckily, a couple of years ago Kasra Ghanbari expressed interest in publishing the book. He has started a multimedia company called VEI and will be publishing the work. He is also interested in publishing Barron Storey’s “Black Iraq” work.

Kasra thought it would be beneficial for me to visit some of the concentration camps, to sketch on the spot and shoot photography to work on some new images for the project. I was flabbergasted. YES! So here we are.

I’ll try and post updates with text, sketches and photographs to this page as the trip progresses. I’m anxious, too, to see the Slav Epic paintings by Alphonse Mucha in Prague!

  More later.

BERLIN: 8/31/07

Have had a busy time of it and little to devote to writing or posting. The internet access has been a little spotty so I’m sorry for no posts. Here in Berlin we now have access and I’ll throw up a few shots and try to write more later.

The trip has been a great success as far as seeing up close and personal many of the concentration camps in Poland and Germany. It’s been an education, to be sure. I hope the photographs convey some of the power and sadness of these places.
