The Ford Sayre summer training program began last weekend with a simple over distance trail run along the Appalachian Trail - beginning at the Hanover Coop and heading over the AT up Three Mile Road trailhead just below Moose Mountain. A nice way to begin working together again. Our second O.D. was a trail run traversing the ridges in Norwich, beginning at Goodrich Four Corners just slightly higher than the river and ending up Gile Mountain. It was a great 2 hours of mixed running on trails, dirt roads, and class IV roads. Although a humid day, the view from the top of the Gile Mountain tower was still pretty amazing!

Notes on the summer training program (from Greg’s June 6th email):
You have all heard the phrase "skiers are made in the summer." And with fall being consumed by the xc running season for many of you, that motto is very true. Summer is the time to put on the volume that will carry you through the mid-March championships. Although some of our summer training will be very ski specific (strength, roller skiing, etc.), it also should include as many other ways you enjoy putting on a base - ranging from long hikes in the mountains to epic mountain bike rides. The important thing is you create a plan that fits your summer work and travel, and goals for next year.
Training as a group has many benefits from learning new technique and training ideas, to helping you get motivated on those less then perfect summer days. Summer training is a great time to learn more specific strength training techniques, develop your roller skiing skills, and develop a long range plan with your coaches. It will also help you think about how to incorporate some ski-specific strength work on your own during the fall xc season. And besides, it's just a heck of a lot more fun to train with others than constantly slogging it out on your own.
Ford Sayre Summer Training '07:
We will be starting earlier than last year, adding a weekend over-distance (hike, trail run, mountain bike, point to point roller ski...), and continue with our Wednesday morning strength sessions. Altogether, the schedule will include 4 days/week of training for most weeks. We know that everyone will not be able to make every session, and that people will be in and out of town with vacations and other travel plans throughout the summer. When you are in town, you should plan on participating in the training sessions. With that said, our schedule will be:
Sunday, June 10: fun distance day, 9am-11:00. hike or mountain bike in Upper Valley.
Sunday, June 17: distance day. morning hike, trail run, or mountain bike.
Sunday, June 24: same, possibly day trip to White Mountains.
Beginning Monday, June 25, the regular schedule will be:
Monday: Roller skiing (weather dependent) 5:00-6:30 pm or 5:00-7:00 pm (depending training schedule, volume needed, etc.).
Wednesday: morning strength work, 7:00-8:15 am.
Thursday: Foot practice (trail run, etc.): 5:00-6:30 pm. or 5:00-7:00 pm.
Saturday or Sunday of each weekend: Over Distance Day (often van trips for long day hike in white and green mountains, etc.).
This Monday/Wednesday/Thursday and weekend OD schedule will continue through August 16th, with high school sports pre-season beginning the following week. This gives us 8 solid weeks, plus weekend days in June. We plan on using the van fairly regularly on weekends, and we will split gas costs for farther trips as we do in winter. The fee for our summer training program will be $200.
What we need from YOU:
- We assume all Ford Sayre high school program skiers will be training with us this summer. If this is not the case, you will need to let us know as soon as possible. We also assume that you will each be away at times during the summer for vacations, but you should still train with us when you are in town.
- Let us know if you will be able to join us for the June 10, 17, and 24 Sunday practices (email Scottie).
- We are looking at some of our weekend practices to be mountain bike rides, let us know if you need a bike (I know of a certain barn that happens to have a few extra, albeit old and beat up, bikes).
- Each skier should make a calendar of their summer schedule and activities. You should contact Scottie, Dennis, or Jay with questions about training, or if you would like to meet with them to help create a training plan based on your goals for next year.
- Bring the above schedule to the first practice you attend.
- Finally, and as always, every athlete should take a 1-2 week break between completing their spring sports and the beginning of summer training. Your legs needs it, your body needs it, and your head needs it.
Questions: feel free to email or call me or Scottie!
