Tournament History
We held our inaugural tournament in April 2006 at ASU Karsten. That tournament brought out 76 players, friends, colleagues, friends or friends. Of course, living in the Valley of the Sun, it was a wonderful day, perfect golf weather. We ran various on-course competitions, closest to the pin, longest drive, etc. One of the favorite holes was the “Las Vegas Hole” where people could place a bet that they could get the ball within the target zone on the green - needless to say, we did not pay out much! We presented prizes to the top 3 teams and a special prize to the worst team. Our second tournament, April 2007 was again held at ASU Karsten - which is now becoming the “home’ of the G4TC Tournament. We had a slightly smaller field, but lots of fun was had nonetheless. Again, the Las Vegas hole proved to be very popular once again - nothing to do with the fact that we had a keg of beer on hand! Unfortunately the weather gods were against us on this day as a huge dust storm blew in and everyone had to run for cover. Lots of fun was still had up on the patio back at the club-house. Lunch was provided, lots of raffle prizes given out and bidding on our silent auction items took place. Again, we awarded prizes to our top 3 team and our “special” team prize. We are looking forward to our 3rd tournament, scheduled for Saturday 31st May 2008 at ASU Karsten (7:30 a.m. shotgun start). The inspiration!
This event is led and is inspired by Geraldine Follmer. Geraldine is a 2-cancer (breast and colon), 2.5 year survivor. Geraldine was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2004 and subsequently diagnosed with stage-III colon cancer in February 2005 (two different cancers). During the many hours that she spent enduring chemotherapy, she came up with the idea of running a charity golf tournament to help raise both funds and awareness, for cancer research. This is Geraldine’s mission - education and fund raising for cancer awareness. Geraldine is very proud of her achievements and she firmly believes that her “cancer can kiss my ass” attitude during 2005 is what helped get her through. That, and her wonderful husband, Terry and their 4-legged son, Hinz! She also wants to show other people that there IS life both during and after cancer. She is living proof of that and she is doing her best to show this off!
