Gary’s Shop (aka garysgaragemahal)

As an introduction, my name is Gary and I’m retired from the field of Information Technology.  My wife, Janey, and I’ve moved back to our home area after having lived many places, including abroad, and we are relishing the additional time we have to relax, be involved at church, enjoy our hobbies, and visit friends and family.

I built my dream shop, and along the way I learned a number of things that I want to share with others who may be able to benefit from it.  This is outlined in The Shop, which includes how I went about designing it, the floor plan, the insulation & HVAC package, the electrical & lighting layout, the finish of the floor, the compressed-air distribution system, a few photos as we were building it, and some as we were moving in.

After a few more projects are complete I will be carrying out a thorough restoration of my ’69 Super Bee, so will be posting periodic updates on that as well.  (See Vehicles.)  And, on that page I share some of my learnings about those cars, as not everything in print is correct.  In addition, I use the shop for maintenance of our daily drivers, such as Janey’s ’01 Subaru Forester, as well as those of friends and family.  On top of that, some vehicles get transformed in there, such as the neighbor’s Jeep TJ and my ’82 F150 pickup.

But, you can’t work without tools and some of those, such as the Enco 110-1351 13x40 lathe, Grizzly G3617 mill, MAXair C7180V1-MS-MAP air compressor, Greg Smith OH9000 lift, home-built powder coating booth, and others may be of interest to you, so I will maintain a section on them, including modifications, tooling, and issues.  (See Tools.)

And, some of the projects I take on, such as a lathe bench for the 13x40 lathe, aluminum wheel restoration, and eventually the rotisserie, shop crane, and engine stand will be detailed - hopefully including as-built drawings.  (See Projects.)

I hope you find something here that is of benefit, or at least triggers some memories.  And if you have questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to click on the button at the right-hand bottom of any page and email me.

Thanks for looking,

Gary

Welcome to my site

This is my shop.  It isn’t quite complete, but probably never will be since I find working on projects to be more fun than painting or installing baseboards.

This site is like the shop itself - “under construction”.

You’ll find a navigation menu like this one on each page, with the current page shown in red, non-visited pages in blue, and visited pages in magenta.
