Phoenix in the Dunes

The Gardner-Mancini family is delighted to welcome you to our house in Castle Park, Michigan, on the shores of Lake Michigan, just a 2.5 hour drive from Chicago.   Begun in 2005 and completed in 2006, it’s brand new and as comfortable as we could make it.  Its location, 700 feet from a large private beach shared by just ten houses, is remote enough to give that “get away from it all” feeling, yet just a short walk or ride from the quaint charm and unparalleled amenities of Castle Park, including eight green-clay tennis courts, swimming pool, community library, Saturday night dances, Thursday bingo, and other pleasures of a bygone era.

Vital stats:

Kitchen:  State of the art gourmet kitchen and adjoining pantry with soapstone countertops, hickory cabinets, propane gas cooktop, electric oven, microwave, french-door refrigerator, dishwasher, garbage disposal, and all standard countertop appliances.    Kitchen window seat and farm table look out on deck and wooded ravine.

Outdoor living:  Back deck and patio put you in the treetops, with excellent morning sun and terrific bird-watching.  Charcoal grill, adirondack chairs, and dining table and chairs.   Another deck wraps around the house on the upper level, with a bump-out overhanging the hill--spectacular yet peaceful.

Gardner House: 1960-2003

In Memoriam

The Gardners have been Castle Parkers since 1960, when Robert and Jean Gardner built their summer house (above), perched on the ridge of South Hill with a lake view to the west and a wooded ravine to the southeast We lost the original house to a freak fire in November 2003, and have done our best to capture its timbered charm in version 2.0, while making plenty of improvements based on our experience of the previous 43 years.
