Digital Glossary

Bitmap images= Windows based PC bitmap format.1-24 bit color, 4-8 bit images that are compressed using lossless compression. 24 bit images not compressed.

Burn=increasing exposure to darken areas during printing in darkroom. Digitally burning darkens areas that the cursor passes over on the computer image.

Byte =unit of information storage in computers, no matter what type of data is being stored.

Crop = cutting an image to eliminate unnecessary material and create a better area of emphasis or overall composition.

Clipboard = The temporary holding area for data stored with the Cut or Copy commands.

Dodge  = decreasing exposure to lighten areas during printing in the darkroom. Digital burning darkens areas that the cursor passes over on the computer image.

EPS=Encapsulated Post Script is usually a format used only for sending a file to the printer.

Form  =a three-dimensional volume or the illusion of 3 dimensions. (Related to shape whith is 2-dimensional.

GIF = Graphics Interchange Format format used for animation and digital video images to be used as Web and presentation. Best for clip art/cartoon style graphics and type.

Gigabyte = unit of information or computer storage equal to 1 billion bytes

Gray scale  = A color mode that supports 256 levels of gray for 8-bit images, or thousands of levels of gray for high-bit images.

JPG = image format created by the Joint Photographers Expert Group. Jpg is a compressed file format used for photos.  24 bit color images good for web and presentation graphics. It combines good image quality and small file sizes. Poor image quality if compressed too much is a result of lossy compression.

Kilobyte = unit of information or computer storage equal to 1024 or 1000 bytes

Lens = the part of camera through which light enters, is focused and transmitted to film, CMOS or CCD.

Line  = the path of a point moving in space. Line can vary in width, length, curvature, color or direction.

Lossless = compression using an algorithm to make a graphics file smaller.  Saving a file into a lossless compression format and reopening it produces a picture, which is exactly the same as the original image.  Not a single pixel will be out of place. You won’t notice, but it takes slightly longer to open, because of reversing all the compression.

Lossy = compression using an algorithm to compact the image resulting in an image that when reopened won’t look exactly the same. This isn’t always a bad thing because for many pictures the difference will be so slight that you won't notice it and this type of compression means the files created will be much smaller. You can also vary the amount of compression used, trading clarity for file size

Megabyte = unit of information or computer storage equal to 1,000,000 bytes

Media = Plural of medium, referring to materials used to make art; categories of art (for example painting, sculpture, film)

PDF  = Portable Document Format Adobe Acrobat

PICT = MAC format vector image similar to tiffs, allowing for file transfer between programs. Is a compressed format that supports 16 to 32 bit color. May be used for vector and bitmap images. Newer versions of office can now read PICT files.

pixels  = tiny dots that make up computer and TV

PNG = Portable (Public) Network Graphic is an alternative to gifs for web pages, but not universally supported yet. 24 bit color with lossless compression

PSD  = format used for Photoshop Documents. Files can be saved with layers or flattened.

raster images = grids of dots, or raw pixels, each pixel containing color    information. They have no information related to shapes or text. They are also known as bitmaps.

Rasterize = to change vector graphics to pixel-based raster graphics.

Rule of thirds = way of composing images by dividing the field of vision into thirds horizontally and vertically and placing the area of emphasis (most important part of image) at the intersection of any two lines.

TIF or TIFF = Tagged Image File Format with 1 bit color to 24 bit color was designed for exchange of images between programs and platforms. Multiple types of tiffs, unfortunately some are incompatible with others. Files are uncompressed, or uses lossless compression

megapixel  = equals one million pixels.

Vector image s= images made up of shapes such as lines, circles, text and even irregular areas. These images are described mathematically using xy coordinates. Images can be drawn perfectly and are easier to change that raster images.

WMF = Windows MetaFile, is the format used for most Microsoft clipart. It’s a vector file that is useable by all office programs.
