First Local Strawberries of the Year!

Having just departed the snowy Northeast on January 1st after a rare winter holiday visit with my extended family, the unseasonably warm temperatures we’ve been having in Southern California lately have been a bit surreal.

Then I opened my CSA box this afternoon and found these beauties!  Wow.  Two pints.  They even taste good.  I’m used to getting great CSA produce, even during the mild CA winter, but usually it’s carrots, beets, kale, collards, cabbage, maybe some apples, oranges, scallions, etc.  I don’t remember getting strawberries this early in the year, though.  I guess my dad is in for a treat when he trades in his snow shovel for a garden spade when he comes out next week for a visit and to work in my garden.

For our dessert tonight I rinsed and sliced some berries and served them topped with some tangy coconut milk yogurt I cultured today, drizzled with the tiniest bit of Mesquite honey.  OMG.

I had to fend off my son’s attempts to get at the strawberries while I snapped these photos to share, not to mention hide the remaining strawberries in the fridge behind a bunch of kale.
