SOS_Children’s_Villages
As a result of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Belarus was severely affected. 70% of the radio active dust fell on Belarus, contaminating the air and the land, impacting on everyday life and resulting in serious economical, health, social and psychological repercussions that would affect future generations. As a result of Chernobyl, SOS Children’s Villages built 13 houses on land given by the state government - this was the first children’s village in Belarus.  There are now two villages   and a third under construction together with other support programmes, a Social Healthcare Centre and a Preventative Care Programme. Gail visited  Belarus to photo-document the work of SOS, one of the only NGO’s that continues to support local communities.  She met some remarkable people and some outstanding children.  Children who had experienced tragic and difficult circumstances, who told their story and who trusted Gail to photograph them. Children growing up in the shadow of Chernobyl.

SOS Children's Villages is an independent, non-governmental and social development organisation, which has been active in the field of children's needs, concerns and rights since 1949. Its activities focus on neglected and abandoned children and orphans, as well as disadvantaged families.
