Double Standards - Video Version

Here’s an effective video version of the double standard comparison I posted on 10/4:
Top 5 Reasons Obama Supporters Shouldn't Rest Easy
Oct 22, 2008 06:41 PM
1. The polls may be wrong. This is an unprecedented election. No one knows how racism may affect what voters tell pollsters—or what they do in the voting booth. And the polls are narrowing anyway. In the last few days, John McCain has gained ground in most national polls, as his campaign has gone even more negative.
2. Dirty tricks. Republicans are already illegally purging voters from the rolls in some states. They're whipping up hysteria over ACORN to justify more challenges to new voters. Misleading flyers about the voting process have started appearing in black neighborhoods. And of course, many counties still use unsecure voting machines.
3. October surprise. In politics, 15 days is a long time. The next McCain smear could dominate the news for a week. There could be a crisis with Iran, or Bin Laden could release another tape, or worse.
4. Those who forget history... In 2000, Al Gore won the popular vote after trailing by seven points in the final days of the race. In 1980, Reagan was eight points down in the polls in late October and came back to win. Races can shift—fast!
5. Landslide. Even with Barack Obama in the White House, passing universal health care and a new clean-energy policy is going to be hard. Insurance, drug and oil companies will fight us every step of the way. We need the kind of landslide that will give Barack a huge mandate.

Who's Better Prepared?
Oct 22, 2008 06:29 PM
Some people accuse Obama of being an elitist intellectual. I don’t know why people are so against well-educated people. That’s not to say that people without an education are bad or lesser people in any way. But, the bottom line for me:
I would much rather have someone who is much smarter than me in the White House.
Compare for yourself:
Barack Obama
Joseph Biden
vs.
John McCain
Sarah Palin
Education isn't everything, but this is about the two highest offices in the land as well as our standing in the world. You make the call.

Barack Obama
- Columbia University - B.A. Political Science with a Specialization in International Relations

- Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.)
vs.
John McCain
- United States Naval Academy - Class rank: 894 of 899
Sarah Palin
- Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester

McCain's Distortions Continue
Oct 17, 2008 05:13 PM
So, McCain makes a big stink about Joe the Plumber and comments that Barack Obama made in answering questions about taxes and small businesses. Is it any surprise that McCain used a tiny, tiny fragment of the dialogue, way out of context, to make his sound bite? Obama gave a pretty clear and specific answer about how small businesses would and wouldn’t be affected by taxes. Even Joe the Plumber (who’s not properly licensed and has two tax liens on him, by the way), likes to make the rounds on the right-wing talk shows using quotes out of context. And, now that the press is digging into Joe’s background, McCain is blaming Obama! He’s claiming Obama is using Joe and putting him in front of the press! Either McCain is even further gone mentally than anyone knew or he’s sleazier than anyone would have guessed. Joe the Plumber voluntarily asked Obama his question. The next time his name and story came up was when McCain wouldn’t shut up about it during the debate. Sounds to me like McCain is really desperate now. Oh and another distortion McCain continues to spread - he’s now placing automated ‘robo-calls’ (many of which may be illegal) claiming Obama “worked closely” with “terrorist” Bill Ayers. It has already been proven many times over that there was no such “close work” and McCain can’t provide proof otherwise. Yet, the distortions and lies continue. Why would anyone vote for this fool?

How Racism Works
Oct 11, 2008 06:58 PM
From Letters to the Editors @ Fort Worth Star-Telegram:
What if John McCain were a former president of the Harvard Law Review?
What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?
What if McCain were still married to the first woman he said "I do" to?
What if Obama were the candidate who left his first wife after she no longer measured up to his standards?
What if Michelle Obama were a wife who not only became addicted to pain killers, but acquired them illegally through her charitable organization?
What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard? What if Obama were a member of the "Keating 5"?
What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?
If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?
This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference.

McCain/Palin Has Hit Absolute Bottom ... So Far
Oct 10, 2008 06:31 PM
It doesn’t matter whether you plan to vote for McCain or Obama. No one in this country should stand for the McCain campaign’s outrageous and inexcusable behavior. Read about it yourself at the links below, but here is a summary:
At a McCain/Palin rally, when Obama’s name was mentioned there were outbursts about “Traitor,” “Terrorist,” and “Kill Him” from McCain/Pailn supporters.
Obama responded, “It's easy to rile up a crowd," Obama said. "Nothing's easier than riling up a crowd by stoking anger and division. But that's not what we need right now in the United States."
To which McCain’s campaign responded, "Barack Obama's assault on our supporters is insulting and unsurprising.”
Umm ... isn’t using terms like traitor, terrorist and kill him a sign of hatred and anger? And are these considered an assault and an insult? Obama didn’t call them names or threaten to kill them. He observed that they appeared angry and, since they want to kill him, it sure seems like there is hatred.
Oh and by the way, why didn’t the McCain campaign denounce these violent comments? Or do they want to encourage their supporters to kill Obama?
McCain Camp Defends Their Behavior?
McCain and Palin's lynch-mob tactics
Angry anti-Obama taunts grip McCain, Palin events
"Kill Him" "Terrorist" "Treason" "Sit down boy"

Sarah Palin - Stop Lying!
Oct 05, 2008 08:17 AM
Sarah Palin (and John McCain too, for that matter) -
How dare you. You should be ashamed. Despite thorough investigation and reporting, you still make lying claims about Obama and Bill Ayers. If you would bother to pay attention to truth and real news, you would know that both Obama and Ayers served together on the Annenberg Challenge, which contrary to your perverse desires, is an educational foundation not a terrorist organization. Oh wait, I forgot. For an insane, right-wing fanatic with ZERO experience, I guess trying to support education of the public could be a problem. It would mean more people would be smart enough to write you off the way you should be.
Stop spreading lies and start talking about what’s real. I haven’t heard anything that tells me you even have a clue what’s wrong with the economy let alone what you are going to do about it. How about if you stop spending your time and money blasting everyone and start telling us what concrete steps you’ll take to help the economy, provide better education for our children, improve America’s relationships with the rest of the world, take care of the environment, fix social security, reign in greedy corporations, and fix healthcare. Do you even know that these are problems? One wouldn’t know based on the trash you’re spewing in your speeches.

Double Standards
Oct 04, 2008 10:34 AM
I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight...
OK, much clearer now.
- If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're 'exotic, different.'
- Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.
- If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
- Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.
- Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
- Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.
- If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.
- If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.
- If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.
- If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.
- If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.
- If , while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.
- If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America's.
- If your husband is nicknamed 'First Dude', with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.
OK, much clearer now.
Get the Real Story - Not McCain's

Watch this video to see what Obama really means and how McCain continues to distort the truth:
There They Go Again
Aug 16, 2008 07:44 AM
The radical right wing is at it again. These same people who espouse “morals” and “family values” share a revealing voice in Jerome Corsi who lied about John Kerry and now lie about Barack Obama. Corsi’s new book is so full of factual errors, that any reputable publishing house wouldn’t have published it. And yet, there is barely a word in the mainstream media mentioning the lies and manipulations. It’s time to put an end to this blatant dishonesty that plagues these right wing fanatic poliitcs.
Get the facts now and let the mainstream press (and all of your friends) know that you won’t stand for lies any more. 8 years of it is enough.

Dear Hillary, Please Explain How This Works
May 07, 2008 09:15 PM
Those states and Democratic constituencies that you've won ... how is that winning these votes means that Obama can't win the general election? Are these Democratic voters going to vote for McCain over Obama? Or maybe they would prefer you, but would prefer a Democrat over another four years of disastrous Republican policies? I don't understand your logic.
Thanks for playing.
Good night.

Ralph Nader - Go Away!
Feb 24, 2008 02:03 PM
Dear Mr. Nader,
Don't you get? You can't win. But, you can screw it up big time (think 2000, 2004)? Why must you do this? Especially given Obama's focus on change. Why don't you just sit down and talk to Obama about getting your ideas into the party platform?

No Experience? Not Ready to be a Leader? NOT!
Feb 24, 2008 10:49 AM
So, Hillary would have you believe that her experience makes her more qualified and capable of getting things done as President, huh? It seems like we have a lot of 'experienced' politicians in Washington, yet nothing is getting done and nothing is changing. Maybe it is time for some new ideas from an intelligent, educated, thinker who can also articulate these ideas clearly? Steve Pearlstein seems to think so. Check out his excellent opinion piece in the Washington Post.
Go Obama!

Lying about the past to protect the right to waste
Jun 26, 2007 07:29 PM
The SUV Owners of America has decided that lying is the best way to protect their right to waste energy and stall any attempt at saving the environment, reducing our dependence on foreign oil and potentially helping the auto industry. They have started an ad campaign that claims the energy crisis of 1973 was caused by energy taxes and overzealous environmental restrictions. They warn that higher fuel economy standards will lead to more lines at the pump.. Huh?
What a load of BS! It amazes me that these people think they can simply ignore history. The long lines at the pump were caused by the oil embargo imposed by certain middle eastern countries that wanted to punish supporters of Israel. The Republican administration of the day used the issue to push through the Alaska pipeline and other nods to big oil just like Bush is doing today.
It's time we took back our country from the greedy oil companies!

Support Our Troops
Mar 22, 2006 05:25 PM
Ready for something completely unthinkable and outrageous? All this time, people have been saying that anyone opposed to the illegal war in Iraq is not supporting the troops. Well, now the Army is the one who is not showing support. Check out this Washington Post article about a soldier who was arrested in the U.S. for assaulting a police officer. Based on his medical condition (diagnosed by Army doctors), it may not have been an assault at all - it could have been an epileptic siezure. So he may be innocent.
Of course, I don't have anywhere near enough information to pass judgement about this man's guilt or innocence, but if the Army doctors can provide information to ensure a fair trial, they should. Instead, they'd rather abandon someone who would have willing laid down his life for his country. Even worse, was a quote from an attorney-adviser at Walter Reed, which read "Our sole concern in this matter is to protect the interests of the United States Army."
So to hell with the dedicated men and women who make the Army even possible!
Now who's supporting the troops?
If this outrages you as much as it does me, please make a lot of noise about this! Write to your senators and representatives, local newspapers, etc.

Brown Resigns From FEMA to Protect Bush Regime
Sep 12, 2005 09:24 PM
I'm sure Michael Brown felt that he could at least help Bush save face by resigning from FEMA. While it appears to be a good thing based on the articles I've read about him , I'm not going to pass judgement on his qualifications. I'll let those with better information do that. However, it can only be a desparate attempt to appear to want to do something to appease the public that really caused him to 'resign'.
Now, what about Karl Rove? Take a look at some of his antics like tax evasion or the various interesting activities of his documented here. And don't forget some of his behind the scenes manipulation of the 'press'.

Bush just keeps at it.
Sep 11, 2005 04:09 PM
I forgot to mention in my previous post how Bush is continuing his campaign to trounce on the environment. To start with, he wants to allow older, dirtier power plants to pollute even more. Not to mention his attempts to rewrite science and pretend that global warming isn't the threat that it really is.
Bush the liar, cheat, and incompetent
Sep 10, 2005 04:15 PM
Nevermind the blame game. I'm sure they'll be enough blame to cover everyone who could have done better helping the victims of Katrina.
Let's talk about Bush friends getting the first contracts for relief and rebuilding efforts.
Or what about Bush suspending the law requiring minimum wage payment to workers in the areas hit by Katrina?
How about FEMA's bungling as documented in Newsweek (9/12/2005):
“On Monday morning, as the storm slammed into the Gulf Coast, Col. Tim Tarchick of the 920th Rescue Wing, Air Force Reserve Command, got on the phone to call every agency he could think of to ask permission to take his three rescue helicopters into the disaster zone as soon as the storm abated. The response was noncommittal. FEMA, the federal agency that is supposed to handle disasters, told Tarchick that it wasn't authorized to task military units. That had to come from the Defense Department. Tarchick wasn't able to cut through the red tape until 4 p.m. Tuesdaymore than 24 hours after the storm had passed. His crews plucked hundreds of people off rooftops, but when they delivered them to an assigned landing zone, there was "total chaos. No food, no water, no bathrooms, no nothing." There was "no structure, no organization, no command center," Tarchick told NEWSWEEK."
Or how about the idea that releasing oil reserves would help gas prices, even though the hurricane took out 10% of our refining capacity? Remember, those are oil reserves, not gasoline!
The same Newsweek article goes on to say:
"Bush's many critics will say that the president was disengaged, on vacation, distracted by Iraq and insensitive to the needs of poor black people. The White House blames the magnitude of the storm itself, patchy information on the ground and a confused chain of command, according to a senior Bush aide who requests anonymity in order to speak freely about internal administration discussions. The truth probably lies somewhere in between. Bush is fighting a war, and he is sometimes slow to react, and he may have been lulled by early reports that New Orleans had been spared the worst of the storm. These are all legitimate excuses. Still, we expect more from a president."
What about the continuing lack of attention to the poor who had no way to escape? Yes, problems evacuating this population may have been due in part to poor planning by state and local officials, but what about the bigger problem of poverty that is worsening under Bush's reign?
So, let's see how this all adds up:
Ignored minorities getting poorer + no minimum wage requirements + Bush's buddies getting lucrative contracts + minorities being removed from voter rolls = Bush's lilly-white country that everyone else hates.
The biggest problem is that the Democrats are not making enough noise about this.
Time to wake up!

Welcome to New California

Dear Red States:
We're ticked off at the way you've treated California, and we've decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and we're taking the other Blue States with us. In case you aren't aware, that includes Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and the entire Northeast. We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially to the people of the new country of New California.
To sum up briefly:
Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and anti-war, and we're going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have kids they're apparently willing to send to their deaths for no purpose, and they don't care if you don't show pictures of their children's caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq, and hope that the WMDs turn up, but we're not willing to spend our resources in Bush's Quagmire.
With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percent of the country's fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 95 percent of America's quality wines (you can serve French wines at state dinners) 90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools, plus Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.
With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88 percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.
We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you!
Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacred unless we're discussing the death penalty or gun laws, 44 percent say that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involved in 9/11 and 61 percent of you crazies believe you are people with higher morals then we lefties.
By the way, we're taking the good pot, too.
You can have that dirt weed they grow in Mexico.
Sincerely,
Author Unknown in New California.

To sum up briefly:
- You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states.
- We get stem cell research and the best beaches.
- We get Elliot Spitzer. You get Ken Lay!
- We get the Statue of Liberty. You get OpryLand.
- We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.
- We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss.
- We get 85 percent of America's venture capital and entrepreneurs. You get Alabama.
- We get two-thirds of the tax revenue; you get to make the red states pay their fair share.
- Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a bunch of single moms.

How to train a soldier not to abuse another human
May 05, 2004 03:14 PM
To start with, I want to make sure everyone understands that 1) I do not support George Bush's war on Iraq, 2) I fully support the men and women who are serving in our armed forces. They have pledged to serve our country and whether I agree with the decision or not, I respect these people for holding true to their pledge and thank them for putting their lives on the line for us, 3) I fully believe that the majority of soldiers would not and have not abused any Iraqi prisoners. This is a horrible act by a very small percentage of our forces.
The thing I find puzzling is the response from our fearless leader Dubya and his gang. They are blaming the problem on lack of training and rushing to train soldiers on prisoner treatment or get 'trained experts' in place to manage the prisoners.
Excuse me, Mr. President. Exactly what type of training is required to ensure that a human being doesn't force another human being to strip naked and lie on the floor?¡
