Top 5 Reasons Obama Supporters Shouldn't Rest Easy

Oct 22, 2008 06:41 PM Filed in: Politics
1. The polls may be wrong. This is an unprecedented election. No one knows how racism may affect what voters tell pollsters—or what they do in the voting booth. And the polls are narrowing anyway. In the last few days, John McCain has gained ground in most national polls, as his campaign has gone even more negative.

2. Dirty tricks.
Republicans are already illegally purging voters from the rolls in some states. They're whipping up hysteria over ACORN to justify more challenges to new voters. Misleading flyers about the voting process have started appearing in black neighborhoods. And of course, many counties still use unsecure voting machines.

3. October surprise.
In politics, 15 days is a long time. The next McCain smear could dominate the news for a week. There could be a crisis with Iran, or Bin Laden could release another tape, or worse.

4. Those who forget history...
In 2000, Al Gore won the popular vote after trailing by seven points in the final days of the race. In 1980, Reagan was eight points down in the polls in late October and came back to win. Races can shift—fast!

5. Landslide.
Even with Barack Obama in the White House, passing universal health care and a new clean-energy policy is going to be hard. Insurance, drug and oil companies will fight us every step of the way. We need the kind of landslide that will give Barack a huge mandate.

If you agree that we shouldn't rest easy, please sign up to volunteer at your local Obama office by clicking here:

Who's Better Prepared?

Oct 22, 2008 06:29 PM Filed in: Politics
Some people accuse Obama of being an elitist intellectual. I don’t know why people are so against well-educated people. That’s not to say that people without an education are bad or lesser people in any way. But, the bottom line for me:

I would much rather have someone who is much smarter than me in the White House.

Compare for yourself:

Barack Obama
  • Columbia University - B.A. Political Science with a Specialization in International Relations
  • Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude

Joseph Biden
  • University of Delaware - B.A. in History and B.A. in Political Science
  • Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.)

vs.

John McCain
  • United States Naval Academy - Class rank: 894 of 899

Sarah Palin
  • Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester
  • North Idaho College - 2 semesters - general study
  • University of Idaho - 2 semesters - journalism
  • Matanuska-Susitna College - 1 semester
  • University of Idaho - 3 semesters - B.A. in Journalism

Education isn't everything, but this is about the two highest offices in the land as well as our standing in the world. You make the call.

McCain's Distortions Continue

Oct 17, 2008 05:13 PM Filed in: Politics
So, McCain makes a big stink about Joe the Plumber and comments that Barack Obama made in answering questions about taxes and small businesses. Is it any surprise that McCain used a tiny, tiny fragment of the dialogue, way out of context, to make his sound bite? Obama gave a pretty clear and specific answer about how small businesses would and wouldn’t be affected by taxes. Even Joe the Plumber (who’s not properly licensed and has two tax liens on him, by the way), likes to make the rounds on the right-wing talk shows using quotes out of context. And, now that the press is digging into Joe’s background, McCain is blaming Obama! He’s claiming Obama is using Joe and putting him in front of the press! Either McCain is even further gone mentally than anyone knew or he’s sleazier than anyone would have guessed. Joe the Plumber voluntarily asked Obama his question. The next time his name and story came up was when McCain wouldn’t shut up about it during the debate. Sounds to me like McCain is really desperate now. Oh and another distortion McCain continues to spread - he’s now placing automated ‘robo-calls’ (many of which may be illegal) claiming Obama “worked closely” with “terrorist” Bill Ayers. It has already been proven many times over that there was no such “close work” and McCain can’t provide proof otherwise. Yet, the distortions and lies continue. Why would anyone vote for this fool?

You need to hear what really went on:

How Racism Works

Oct 11, 2008 06:58 PM Filed in: Politics
From Letters to the Editors @ Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

What if John McCain were a former president of the Harvard Law Review?

What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?

What if McCain were still married to the first woman he said "I do" to?

What if Obama were the candidate who left his first wife after she no longer measured up to his standards?

What if Michelle Obama were a wife who not only became addicted to pain killers, but acquired them illegally through her charitable organization?

What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard? What if Obama were a member of the "Keating 5"?

What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?

If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?

This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference.

McCain/Palin Has Hit Absolute Bottom ... So Far

Oct 10, 2008 06:31 PM Filed in: Politics
It doesn’t matter whether you plan to vote for McCain or Obama. No one in this country should stand for the McCain campaign’s outrageous and inexcusable behavior. Read about it yourself at the links below, but here is a summary:

At a McCain/Palin rally, when Obama’s name was mentioned there were outbursts about “Traitor,” “Terrorist,” and “Kill Him” from McCain/Pailn supporters.

Obama responded, “It's easy to rile up a crowd," Obama said. "Nothing's easier than riling up a crowd by stoking anger and division. But that's not what we need right now in the United States."

To which McCain’s campaign responded, "Barack Obama's assault on our supporters is insulting and unsurprising.”

Umm ... isn’t using terms like traitor, terrorist and kill him a sign of hatred and anger? And are these considered an assault and an insult? Obama didn’t call them names or threaten to kill them. He observed that they appeared angry and, since they want to kill him, it sure seems like there is hatred.

Oh and by the way, why didn’t the McCain campaign denounce these violent comments? Or do they want to encourage their supporters to kill Obama?

Sarah Palin - Stop Lying!

Oct 05, 2008 08:17 AM Filed in: Politics
Sarah Palin (and John McCain too, for that matter) -

How dare you. You should be ashamed. Despite thorough investigation and reporting, you still make lying claims about Obama and Bill Ayers. If you would bother to pay attention to truth and real news, you would know that both Obama and Ayers served together on the Annenberg Challenge, which contrary to your perverse desires, is an educational foundation not a terrorist organization. Oh wait, I forgot. For an insane, right-wing fanatic with ZERO experience, I guess trying to support education of the public could be a problem. It would mean more people would be smart enough to write you off the way you should be.

Stop spreading lies and start talking about what’s real. I haven’t heard anything that tells me you even have a clue what’s wrong with the economy let alone what you are going to do about it. How about if you stop spending your time and money blasting everyone and start telling us what concrete steps you’ll take to help the economy, provide better education for our children, improve America’s relationships with the rest of the world, take care of the environment, fix social security, reign in greedy corporations, and fix healthcare. Do you even know that these are problems? One wouldn’t know based on the trash you’re spewing in your speeches.

Double Standards

Oct 04, 2008 10:34 AM Filed in: Politics
I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight...

  • If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're 'exotic, different.'
  • Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.
  • If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
  • Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.
  • Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
  • Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.
  • If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor,  spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of  13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.
  • If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.
  • If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.
  • If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.
  • If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.
  • If , while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.
  • If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America's.
  • If your husband is nicknamed 'First Dude', with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now.

The radical right wing is at it again. These same people who espouse “morals” and “family values” share a revealing voice in Jerome Corsi who lied about John Kerry and now lie about Barack Obama. Corsi’s new book is so full of factual errors, that any reputable publishing house wouldn’t have published it. And yet, there is barely a word in the mainstream media mentioning the lies and manipulations. It’s time to put an end to this blatant dishonesty that plagues these right wing fanatic poliitcs.

Get the facts now and let the mainstream press (and all of your friends) know that you won’t stand for lies any more. 8 years of it is enough.

MobileMess - Where's the Customer Service?

Jul 27, 2008 08:31 PM Filed in: Apple
Okay. As big as the MobileMe rollout was, I can understand some problems. Apple was way too optimistic about how it would go. That being said, I have not been able to successfully sync contacts to Outlook on Windows XP. I tried all of the troubleshooting steps on the website and then used the online chat to try to get some help. No luck there, so they escalated and said I would get an email from a MobileMe specialist within 24-48 hours. That was on 7/16. I have not heard anything. I’ve also noticed that the option to email support is gone and chat is now the only option. Half the time I’ve tried to use chat during the past week, it’s been unavailable due to the “overwhelming interest.” Yeah, right. Maybe it’s the overwhelming problems. The other half the time I try to chat, I can get in, but I’m waiting at least 20 minutes according to their clock, which often sits at 20 minutes for 10 minutes without changing, although sometimes it goes backwards. When I tried a few minutes ago, I found out that chat support is only from 8am - 7pm.

Since my MobileMe will renew soon, I’ll have to seriously consider if I’m keeping it.

For the record (and all the web crawlers out there, here’s the chat session from 7/16:

Let's Watch Verizon FiOS Support

Jul 14, 2008 07:41 PM Filed in: Annoyances
For the last 18 months, I’ve had tons of trouble with Verizon customer service. Not that they have caused serious outages or costs, but they have taken forever to straighten out simple problems and frequently require multiple contacts to fix something. Most typically, I’ll send an email via their support site. I will then get a response that is completely irrelevant and then I’ll have to follow up with more emails and, in many cases, a phone call or two.

I’ve often thought about documenting the entire 18 months worth of excitement, but I’m not sure my notes are quite good enough for all of the amusing detail. In the meantime, enjoy this most recent exchange as it develops.

Here is the message I sent to Verizon today - July 14, 2008 at 7:45pm EDT:

“Following the directions on your website, I requested a free digital adapter for one of my TVs. The website indicated that I can install the adapter myself and no mention was made regarding a technician visiting. Today, I got a phone call indicating that a technician had tried to visit and I wasn't home. The order status also shows that a technician would be coming. Please explain what this is for and please confirm that I will not be charged for any visit. The digital adapter is supposed to be free and self-installable. Thank you.”

Let’s see what happens....

We are in trouble...

  • The population of this country is 300 million.
  • 160 million are retired.
  • That leaves 140 million to do the work.
  • There are 85 million in school.
  • Which leaves 55 million to do the work.
  • Of this there are 35 million employed by the federal government.
  • Leaving 15 million to do the work.
  • 2.8 million are in the armed forces preoccupied with killing Osama Bin-Laden.
  • Which leaves 12.2 million to do the work.
  • Take from that total the 10.8 million people who work for state and city Governments. And that leaves 1.4 million to do the work.
  • At any given time there are 188,000 people in hospitals.
  • Leaving 1,212,000 to do the work.
  • Now, there are 1,211,998 people in prisons.

That leaves just two people to do the work -- you and me.

And there you are, sitting on your ass, at your computer, reading jokes.

Nice...

Real nice.

Center for Disease Control Alert

The Centers for Disease Control has issued a medical alert about a highly contagious, potentially dangerous virus that is transmitted orally, by hand, and even electronically. This virus is called Weary Overload Recreational Killer (WORK). If you receive WORK from your boss, any of your colleagues, or anyone else via any means whatsoever - DO NOT TOUCH IT. This virus will wipe out your private life completely. If you should come into contact with WORK you should immediately leave the premises.

Take two good friends to the nearest grocery store and purchase one or both of the antidotes - Work Isolating Neutralizer Extract (WINE) and Bothersome Employer Elimination Rebooter (BEER). Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.

Dear Mr. Nader,

Don't you get? You can't win. But, you can screw it up big time (think 2000, 2004)? Why must you do this? Especially given Obama's focus on change. Why don't you just sit down and talk to Obama about getting your ideas into the party platform?

So, Hillary would have you believe that her experience makes her more qualified and capable of getting things done as President, huh? It seems like we have a lot of 'experienced' politicians in Washington, yet nothing is getting done and nothing is changing. Maybe it is time for some new ideas from an intelligent, educated, thinker who can also articulate these ideas clearly? Steve Pearlstein seems to think so. Check out his excellent opinion piece in the Washington Post.

Great Tool for Creating Passwords

Feb 17, 2008 03:59 PM Filed in: Computers
Having trouble creating a password that is both secure and easy to remember? My favorite trick is to use numbers and symbols that look like letters to help you remember. This way you can create a password that looks much like a real word, but because of the numbers and symbols, it is very hard to crack. For example, you could change the word password to p@ssw0rd. The challenge of course, is coming up with good words and then substituting numbers and/or symbols for the right letters. That's where Password Maker comes in. This Mac OS X Dashboard widget takes the word you type and automatically substitutes numbers and symbols for some of the letters. Voila - instant, easy security.

A Great Mac Tool for Digital Photographers (or Anyone Who Needs to Update Attributes!)

Feb 14, 2008 05:33 PM Filed in: Computers
Since moving to the Mac, one of the things I've missed is a way to easily update the EXIF date for my digital photos. Photoshop won't let me do it, nor will the Finder. If you think this isn't a big deal, consider these problems:
  • Ever forget to set the time on your camera?
  • Have you modified photos and then find that iPhoto shows the out of order?
  • Do you have software that doesn't read EXIF date but you want to sort by the date the picture was taken?

If you said yes to any of these, the you need A Better Finder Attributes. This software provides a number of different ways to update your files that Finder should have had. You can even set the changes you want to make and create a 'droplet' so you can just drag the files to the app and have them updated automatically.

Of course, there's much more to it than changing EXIF date and file dates. You can modify a good number of attributes that normally require you to create some pretty ugly terminal command lines.

Plus, the developer is quite responsive to support requests.

Our Fundamental Being
Evelyn Underhill

We mostly spend our lives conjugating three verbs: to Want, to Have, and to Do. Craving, clutching, and fussing, on the material, political, social, emotional, intellectual, even on the religious plane, we are kept in perpetual unrest: forgetting that none of these verbs have any ultimate significance, except so far as they are transcended by and included in, the fundamental verb, to Be: and that Being, not wanting, having and doing, is the essence of the spiritual life.

How true. A year after buying my Mac Pro, Apple introduces one twice as powerful for the same price. What are you going to do? Damn you Gordon Moore.

Ten Thoughts for 2008

Jan 04, 2008 05:39 PM Filed in: Humor
Number 10
Life is sexually transmitted.

Number 9
Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.

Number 8

Men have two emotions: Hungry and Horny. If you see him without an erection, make him a sandwich.

Number 7
Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.

Number 6
Some people are like a Slinky ... not really good for anything, but  you still can't help but smile when you shove them down the stairs.

Number 5

Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing.

Number 4
All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.

Number 3
Why does a slight tax increase cost you $200.00 and a substantial  tax cut saves you $0.30?

Number 2

In the '60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world  is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

Number 1
We know exactly where one cow with Mad-cow-disease is located among  the millions and millions of cows in America, but we haven't got a clue as to where thousands of illegal immigrants and terrorists are located.  Maybe we should put the Department of Agriculture in charge of immigration.

And the BONUS thought for today
Life is like a jar of jalapeños.  What you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
