Sea Smoke Dawn
2009
On June 22, 2004 several members of the State of Maine’s executive staff and cabinet traveled to Pleasant Point and introduced an Oklahoma based company, Quoddy Bay LLC, to tribal members. Maine’s role in imposing LNG on our community has never been adequately explained. Quoddy Bay LLC is one of three companies vying to situate an LNG terminal along Eastern Maine’s coast--Passamaquoddy Bay.
The State of Maine recently released its energy plan (dated January 9, 2009), which includes a plan for LNG in Passamaquoddy Bay. While it’s being touted as an alternative/green energy plan overall -- its message falls short when it implies that LNG is good for Eastern Maine.
Can you call a plan green when part of what underlies it is “environmental injustice.” LNG was not our vision.
As long as Maine’s energy plan concludes that LNG is good for us, Maine’s energy vision remains skewed. Failing to let go of stale and unworkable ideas is not farsightedness, but it is what is most lacking in this plan (see page 20).
Tell Maine’s Governor and legislators that it’s going to take more than green ink to make a green energy plan.

Objective:
Convene a year-long, natural gas “dialogue” with all major natural gas players in the state to define the critical challenges regarding the development of traditional natural gas and Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) in Maine and to identify opportunities for the development of traditional natural gas and LNG projects where economically, socially and environmentally feasible.
Implementation:
Establish a host committee of key natural gas industry leaders.
Organize a “kick-off” reception for key natural gas industry, regulators and
other stakeholders to be addressed by Governor.
Conduct a series of 4-5 policy dialogue meetings over the next year to discuss
important issues facing the natural gas industry, potential expansion and
potential barriers and solutions.
Continue to explore the feasibility of the development of a LNG facility in
Maine. (See: page 52).

President Obama says leaders need to let go of the stale and old ideas that got us into today’s mess. He also says it will take clean and renewable energy to remedy America’s foreign fuel dependency. Photo: Sea Smoke Dawn, Mill Cove, Passamaquoddy Bay 2/6/09 iphone.
