Will The Circle Be Unbroken? 音楽史の基礎 〜”大衆音楽”の謎〜

アメリカの国を作る中心になったのはイギリスからの難民ですが、彼らが、自分はもうイギリス人ではなくてアメリカ人、との自意識を持った時に初めてアメリカという国が実質的に生まれたと言えるので、アメリカの音楽をソレとして定義するのは、難しいわけです。アメリカの大衆音楽を定義するにあたって、次の様な問題が絡みます：

１−アメリカとイギリスの関係、２−白人と黒人の関係、３−イングランド、スコットランド、アイルランド、南欧、東欧など諸民族の関係、４−中産階級と労働者階級の関係。

階層分化に関しては、家族や友人とのだんらんでピアノを弾いてみんなで歌う人達の中産階級が成立していた一方で、息抜きに娯楽を楽しむ労働者階級もあり、後者がポピュラー音楽の本筋となっていくのが通例ですが、アメリカの場合どうだったんでしょう。

The British immigrants are crucial in defining the American culture as such.
We cannot talk about real American culture before the British haven’t settled themselves in their new country to identify themselves as American citizens.

By the same token, different aspects have to be considered when defining American Popular Music:

the relationship of
1) America and Great Britain, 2) the blacks and whites,
3) the English, the Scottish, the Irish, the South Europeans and the Slavs,
4) the Middle-class and lower class.

#1, #2, and #3 will remain a constant issue in discussing the real roots of Popular Music. As for #4, we will take a close look at the connection between the industry and the subculture of American music.
