WOMEN COMPOSERS CONCERT

Musicians:
Sarah Case, violin & viola; Kari Gunderson, violin;  Nathan Hamm, piano; Lea Pearson, flute and Mark Rudoff, cello were joined by Judy Kleen, violin; Joanna Lowenstein, soprano and Mark Merchant, bass.


Works performed:

Hildegard, a medieval mystic, wrote more than 70 vocal works. The Antiphon presented in this concert was transcribed for the Kronos string quartet.

Italian Ana Bon’s Baroque Sonata for flute and keyboard, with cello continuo, was followed by a beautiful Romantic Trio for flute, cello and piano by Louise Farrenc.

To honor the earth-centered spirituality embraced by much of the women’s community, a work for voice, piano and flute by Andrea Clearfield, entitled “Gaia,” opened the second half of the program.

Music by the early 20th century French composer Mel Bonis has only recently been published, and includes a Suite for flute, violin and piano.

Closing the program was the exciting “Four on the Floor” by Libby Larsen – a boogie woogie-style tribute to fast American cars  -  for violin, viola, piano and bass.

The UUNIVERSE! concert series debuted Saturday, May 2, 2009, to an audience of more than 80 enthusiastic music lovers. 
People enjoyed the variety of repertoire, the diversity of composers, and most importantly, the exciting music beautifully played! Two favorites were the Farrenc Trio and the Larsen Four on the Floor (see description below).

The June 18 GLBT composers concert on the eve of PRIDE weekend, was attended by more than 90 patrons, gamely participating in Pauline Oliveros’ Sonic Meditation. First UU’s Senior Minister Reverend Mark Belletini offered personal thoughts on the power of discovering music by gay composers and the affirmation it brought for a gay minister.
