These children are truly disadvantaged -
For some, the only meals they get are at our school. Their caretakers cannot or will not have the kids treated for even minor illnesses, such as scabies or lice. And hospital visits only cost $2.50US, medicines included. That is a lot of money for a person unemployed, or who makes $2.00 to $10.00 per day. And has to feed 6 or more kids. Some children are unwanted burdens in their new homes and are vulnerable to abuse. One of our pressing needs is for a “Safe House - Shelter” where victims of abuse can reside until they are placed with a caring, compassionate family. “Orphanage” is a foreign (unacceptable) concept in Swaziland because, traditionally, all children MUST live with relatives when their parents are gone. With the AIDS epidemic, suitable relatives get harder and harder to find.
