The Oregon Sea Grant has just produced a documentary DVD, Celilo Falls and the Remaking of the Columbia River. It provides a glimpse of the life at Celilo as it once was and considers the cultural, social, and political forces that brought about its end, signaling a new era in the relationship between people and nature.
The Indian experience at Celilo is conveyed through previously unpublished color film footage of the fishery and many historic photographs, while the history of the development of the Columbia for industry and commerce is presented through archival film footage from the Bonneville Power Administration, the Oregon Historical Society, and other sources.
You can buy your own copy from the Oregon State University Marketplace, or, better yet, request it at your local library—that way even more people can learn about Celilo!
"A vivid portrayal of a sacred place . . . an accurate, concise, realistic depiction of Celilo Falls and the clash between modernity and tradition."-Elizabeth Woody, Native American poet and visual artist.
