Q: I
see classified ads in magazines for information on acreage in several
western states for only “pennies per acre.” Some of these
ads include Alaska in the states that they will send you information
on. Are you just selling a DVD version of the same thing?
A: These ads, or some version of them, have been around for decades.
All of the programs that I am aware of will send you information on
federal surplus land sales. In past years, these ads would send you a
short one or two page report or booklet on “secret”
government sources of land. In more recent years, you are more likely
to receive little more than a printed and photocopied copy of a
government website that is available to anyone with a computer. These
federal lands programs consist of surplus land offered by the Bureau of
Land Management (BLM).

At the time I am writing this, there was not one parcel of property
available for sale or bid in the state of Alaska through the BLM.
Granted, that could change at any moment, but the federal government
has proved to be a poor source of land in recent years. By contrast,
the sources of land in Alaska that this DVD is based on have over 450
combined parcels of land listed on the day that I am writing this.
These parcels total several thousand acres.
Q: Why would any government entity give away valuable land?
A: Despite the apparent straightforward nature of this question, it is
a deceptively complex issue. The easy answer is that land transfer
programs have been included in the laws of the state of Alaska. The
state is legally obligated to make a number of parcels available for
bid, sale, or claim to citizens each year. Other programs use land
grants to fund social service programs, schools, and public/private
partnerships. All of the programs will require some investment in time
and money. These are not land giveaways.
Q: Can I still take part in homesteading programs?
A: The original homestead programs officially died with
legislation enacted in 1986. While the current programs are sometimes
referred to as ‘modern homesteading,’ they are not
technically homesteading programs. In many ways, the current land
transfer programs are far more flexible and have more different types
of parcels than any of the previous public homesteading programs.

A: In addition to the 1 hour, 15 minute video program, this DVD also

Word, and Pages files containing additional resources on Alaska lands
programs, building in Alaska, getting a job in the state, and generally
building your new life in the north.
Q: What kind of land is available in the Alaska public lands programs?
A: Most of the land parcels available in the Alaska lands programs
include rural and semi-rural properties. Most parcels are between one
and 20 acres. There are also a limited number of existing homes and
urban building lots included. The selection and types of properties
varies over time.
Q: Is everyone eligible to take part in the land programs described in this DVD?
A: The qualifications of eligibility vary between programs. Some
state-administered programs mandate that participants meet Alaska
residency requirements, which are defined as one year of permanent
residency prior to the public listing of any given parcel. Other
programs have no such requirements.
Q: Is financing available for public lands programs?
A: Financing at competitive rates is provided as part of some programs.
Other programs will require that you find your own real estate
financing. Information on these financing options is included in the
DVD.
