Isadore Shank designed numerous buildings for the Teamsters Union Education and Retirement Center from 1962 through 1972. The project involved a golf course and golf clubhouse, water treatment plant, meeting hall, dormitory, children’s camp and workshop, swimming pool and numerous other buildings. The butterfly- shaped copper roof in the Children’s Workshop and the playful deep window insets and boxed singular windows in the Meeting Hall lend an elegant grace to this project.
Shank’s conflation of material and structure is the key to understanding his aesthetic. The authenticity and distinction in his work arise from this balance. Shank’s love of materials, structural integrity and innate mastery of scale transcend architecture into art.
