In 1940 Shank founded and developed the enclave of Graybridge. His partner at the time architect Jim Auer built next door to Shank. In addition to his own house, Shank designed four for clients, some of them relatives. Auer designed two. Each unique house includes many of the traits that distinguished his later structures. The massing, horizontal arrangement of strip windows, use of materials and deck, foretell his later contemporary houses.
