presented by NOS Energy Drink
CHARLOTTE, NC, December 7, 2008 –
EnduranceKarting.com was the winning team in Sunday’s 12 Hour’s of Victory Lane Karting, presented by NOS Energy Drink. The winning foursome covered 1386 laps on the 13-turn indoor course at Victory Lane Karting in Charlotte, NC. The midnight-to-noon endurance challenge ended in a close battle, as the victors defeated the second place entry, Stacked, by a margin of only 22.25 seconds. Fifteen teams of four to six drivers each entered the once-around-the-clock race, including some of the finest drivers from across the United States.
EnduranceKarting.com (consisting of Pennsylvania entrant Kevin Bligan with three North Carolina-based drivers, Johan Schwartz, Jeff Hasselmeyer and Dan Burke) won the $1,500 winner’s check utilizing a strategy of double stints (60 minutes each) for nearly the entire 12-hour duration. The strategy paid-off, as they were able to narrowly defeat the team known as Stacked.
“We dropped to last place very early in the race,” explained winning team manager Schwartz. “We made two pit stops on the first couple of laps to get a better kart, so we had to fight from the back of the field. Our strategy was to use double stints for each of our drivers, and we finally were able to catch the leaders when they had some mechanical problems midway through the event.”
The pole position went to Stacked (a team of Hans Soneson, Mike Ibach, Robbie Freeman and Don Osmond), and they took advantage of their starting spot to jump into an early lead. The lead continued to grow until slightly past the halfway-mark of the race when they had a variety of mechanical gremlins and problems following a fueling pit stop. The team lost their two-lap lead and was forced to push hard for the remainder of the race, inching closer and closer to the eventual winners to finish on the lead lap. Their second-place finish earned each of the drivers a new racing helmet.
Both teams completed 1386 laps, which translates into more than 18,000 corners covered in the twelve hours of racing.
The Finish Line team put on a late charge to finish third, 22 laps behind the leaders, followed by Express Lube in fourth and Field Fillers in fifth. The Field Fillers team was notable because of a line-up of second-generation racers plus Joey Logano. Each of the members wore vintage NASCAR uniforms made famous by their fathers, open-faced helmets and bubble goggles.
The fastest lap of the event was turned by Dan “Danimal” Burke, whose 30.259-second lap was quicker by .001 (one-thousandth of a second) than the best lap turned by Zack Skolnick of the Finish Line team.
Third through tenth-place were separated by only 33 laps, a margin of approximately two and a half percent after 12 hours of racing.
The next major karting event is the 24 Hours of America, which runs Jan. 2-4, 2009. The race takes place at the Palm Beach International Raceway (formerly Moroso Raceway Park) in West Palm Beach, FL. For more information, click to EnduranceKarting.com.
