Day 2: With a little help from our friends Operation Photo Rescue
Tuesday, January 31, 2006

Another day in the Pass and the pace has yet to slow. Although we didn’t see the amount of traffic we were expecting to come through OPR’s command center, aka the library, we still managed to take in quite a few more “orders.”

Luckily, help came from all directions. Kevin Morrow and Reza Marvashti back at The Free Lance-Star completed 11 restorations that Becky and I had transmitted to them this morning. Thanks also goes out to Charlie Borst and Mike Morones for putting the word out about the project to the four corners of the photojournalism community.

Help also came in the form of a young AmeriCorps volunteer named Ben. He did a great deal of work for us as he photographed the damaged photos on the copy stand leaving Becky and I to work on restorations. We never got his last name, but Dave called him Dan once. We did buy him lunch.

Many of the locals who came by today told us that they saw us on TV last night. Something tells me that our instant celebrity status won’t amount to much. It certainly didn’t help Becky and I to get seated any quicker at TGI Friday’s. The pot stickers we ordered were only half cooked as well. Apparently, our waiter did not recognize us.

Other OPR Day 2 news includes:
Becky learned what a po’ boy sandwich is. And we both learned that Mississippi gnats are mean. They’re like itty bitty piranhas.

Tonight’s movie: X-Men 2
Harry Stegenga displays Becky’s restoration of an old photo of his father that was nearly lost to mold contamination.
Ben, no last name given, rocked the copy stand pretty much all day. He definitely earned his grilled cheese sandwich today.
