Rebel 2 is a program that promotes a tobacco free lifestyle and is in its inaugural year at Northfield Community School.  Our club advisors, Kim Harris (seventh grade ILA and Science) and Lisa Carlton (seventh grade ILA) are trained through Atlantic Prevention Resources.  In turn, the advisors "train" the REBEL2 students who learn about a tobacco free lifestyle and then in turn educate their peers! It is a great program and fits nicely into our Healthy School Initiative.

Did you know that there are several thousand different chemicals in one cigarette?  Seventh graders at Northfield Community School do!  The Rebel2 Students created Kick Butts Day on April 11, 2008 where they planned several activities for both indoors and outdoors, activities with an anti-tobacco message.  One of the indoor events was a "Tobacco Tutorial" where students were asked to take a tobacco related true/false quiz and then Rebel 2 members discussed the correct answers with the class.  The other programs were Toast for Change (Students signed banner and created a smoke free message), and Tobacco Toss (students tossed  "cigarettes" into trash cans labeled with anti-tobacco messages and valued at different points with the hope of scoring as many points as possible for their homeroom.)  Rebel 2 members kept score.  One of the favorite outdoor activities was the "Shoot for a Smoke Free Life" basketball contest.  The other outdoor activities were: Run Away from Smoking (Homeroom relay race), and Dodge Big Tobacco (dodgeball). Once point values are tabulated, the winning homeroom will be treated to a pizza party.

The seventh graders left school on Friday armed with tobacco facts and the knowledge to help them stay away from tobacco products of any type.  The youth empowered Rebel 2 members were pleased with the day and look forward to planning more events to help students stay smoke free.

On Tuesday we will be at the Rebel and Rebel2 County Summit meeting at the Tighe School in Margate.

After the summit we will be working on creating skits for the fourth and fifth grades.  That is the big culminating activity for the students.  It's required of the members to perform these skits once a year.
