How to Clean Cast-iron Cookware
Sunday, 9 March 2008

there's some contention about this.  personally, i usually:

do not use any soap or detergent.
do not use any steel-wool nor other strong, harsh or abrasive scrubbing tools.
use a sponge or wash cloth.
wipe away all grime and food particles.
as needed, use a non-scratch scrubber or pad to remove stubborn bits.
rinse with clean water.
then put the cast-iron on a burner or in the oven at the

Gardening With Critters
31 May 2007

I've been trying my hand at gardening here at Hearth Hill.   My herbs and sunflowers are just today the first things to sprout.    And this despite some animal (I think it was a possum) having completely dug up two containers, in which I'd planted basil and dill.   I guess the organic potting soil smelled tasty.   Last weekend I just tossed that potting soil back in there, intending to

Time To Myself
27 May 2007

i enjoy extended periods with an exclusive franchise on my own company.   i like the freedom from distraction.   i like the outer silence that fertilizes introspection.   i like doing as i please.   and i like me.   sometimes it's quite the party.

but i'm a more social being than i was as a youth.   while i'm not handicapped by solitude, as many monkeys are, i have come to enjoy the company

Springing
22 April 2007

I've just had a very good week, on a roll, focused, full of creative energy, getting a lot done, haven't wanted to rest for more than 10 minutes at a time.   I feel like I am the spring time.   It just feels great to finally have spring back!   And now I’m responding to the long pent up desire for warm air and new life.

At night, I just don't want to quit the three things I'm still

my stream-o-consciousness scrapbook
1 March 2007

I’m trying something new this evening, and may already be addicted.   I’ve been wanting to create some sorta looser and more frivolous multi-media catch-all blog-thing for this site, a page onto which I could toss whatever shiny little something caught my eye on today’s journey.   But that idea has sat on the back burner, while more important tasks absorbed my time.

But here’s what I love

Comments Lost
25 February 2007

My apologies to everyone who’s taken the time to leave comments on any of my previous blog entries.   Unfortunately, some of the files in this web site got corrupted; and the quick fix was to restore the entire web site from a backup copy -- at which point, all the comments got lost.   They’re still out there on a server somewhere, trying to find the previous copy of my web site (which isn’t

airborne somewhere over the southeast
14 February 2007

i'm flying on a cloudless night.   do you realize that, all the way from south Florida to central New Jersey, there's not a single second when you can't see a thousand or more electric lights on the ground below?   from up here, it’s easy to grok that huddled on the surface of this planet are throngs of humans numbering:

Vegan Poetry
14 February 2007

“Last time I flipped out around friends it all ended with me stomping away from a bunch of vegans in our organic garden. I had a machete, and was heading for McDonald's. Luckily, before I reached McDonald's, I realized the machete might not be welcome there, so I ditched it.

“I was in a terrible mood (I don't remember why), and had gone to the garden to chop down bamboo to make a bamboo

The Myth of Normalcy
10 February 2007

I theorize that the only thing "normal" people have in common is they all fake being (whatever it is they believe to be) normal, because they're desperately afraid the rest of us will find out what freaks they really are.   Hence, there is no such thing as normal.   There are only admitted freaks and closeted freaks.
