I've been trying my hand at gardening here at Hearth Hill.   My herbs and sunflowers are just today the first things to sprout.    And this despite some animal (I think it was a possum) having completely dug up two containers, in which I'd planted basil and dill.   I guess the organic potting soil smelled tasty.   Last weekend I just tossed that potting soil back in there, intending to replant the pots later.   And, as you can see in the photo, I improvised with a scrap of chainlink to keep the little dirt grubber out.   But lo, both pots are sprouting today.   Of course, now it will probably be a mix of herbs in each pot, since I had no way of returning the scattered seeded soil to the same pot from which it had been thrown.   Anyway, this is why I started my gardening with herbs; they're pretty easy.   Even with the help of a possum, it’s hard for me to kill what I sow.
