Michael Russell is Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning in the Scottish Government and was a Member of the Scottish Parliament for the South of Scotland Region until 22nd March 2011.
Cast your mind back to May 2007 and the thrill of every local member when Jim Mather won the Argyll & Bute seat in the Scottish Parliament against all the odds. That ushered in the narrowest of national victories, allowing the SNP to become the party of Government in Scotland for the first time.
Three years on that Government has delivered more than three quarters of its manifesto pledges. Scotland is a better country. But there is much still to do locally and nationally. Jim's great work, and the great work of our local councillors in administration at Kilmory needs to be supported and carried forward. To do so we must win Argyll & Bute again at the Scottish Parliament elections next May.
I have lived in this constituency for almost 20 years. My wife, Cathleen, is a local head teacher and my son, Cailean, had all his schooling in Cowal. During my time as SNP Chief Executive and in the first Parliament as well as in this one I have worked with local representatives and the the local party on a whole range of issues.
Now, with the support of the entire constituency and working hand in hand with Jim and the council group, I am going flat out to win next May. I hope I will meet you at some stage during the campaign and that I can count on your vote.
