Constellations Bigband
May I say that Andrew D’Angelo, via obvious
and un-obvious means, crossed over and lifted
the veil ....and has brought back some stuff from
the other side... because the solo he played
on ‘Regression’ this night had everyone in the
band and in the audience ........re-thinking a reality.

Resembles Life what once was held of Light,
Too ample in itself for human sight ?
An absolute Self--an element ungrounded--
All, that we see, all colours of all shade
By encroach of darkness made ?--
Is very life by consciousness unbounded ?
And all the thoughts, pains, joys of mortal breath,
A war-embrace of wrestling Life and Death ?
-Coleridge
August 6-13 2009
Australian Tour with Fred Wesley and the New JB’s:
August 8 Melbourne at the HIFI
Wow, 900 people at the Hifi on Swanston Street. What a great treat for me to be able to come to my home town with all those great musicians of funk. Reggie Ward's guitar clocking in time like no other, its incredible and almost bizarre because I am home but also, on the road.
This mixing of worlds so strange.
We have been so welcomed here, we ate at Pelegrinis on Bourke street, in the kitchen, with the owner being most hospitable but also cursing at his staff. At one point he said to one of the guys who work for him "dont ask me, just use your head biaaatch"!!
So funny!
Got to say that the Clavinet is one of the greatest instruments ever made.
I had forgotten all about it. Our last gig before Australia with Fred was in Luxembourg and they had a clavinet backstage. The stage guys were sort of proud so they asked me to use it. As soon as I plugged it in all the memories flooded back! What a fantastic axe... and so perfect for Fred Wesley’s sound. Its so responsive and the low end on a decent clav is like a filthy harpsichord of death.
I am so very lucky to be able to play music with such fantastic players and people and to come home and present this music. great.

He has spoken.
In his brilliant lecture entitled "The Theory and Function of Duende" Frederico Garcia Lorca attempts to shed some light on the eerie and inexplicable sadness that lives in the heart of certain works of art. "All that has dark sound has duende", he says, "that mysterious power that everyone feels but no philosopher can explain." ... all in all it would appear that duende is too fragile to survive the brutality of technology and the ever increasing acceleration of the music industry. Perhaps there is just no money in sadness, no dollars in duende. Sadness or duende needs space to breathe. Melancholy hates haste and floats in silence. It must be handled with care

By Matthew Arnold
Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! for the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams,
So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,
Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night.

2007.05.11 La Maroquinerie, Paris, France... Pee Wee Ellis and Fred have an almost telepathic connection...
its freaky , they come up with spontaneous horn lines at the same time! and rattle them off as if
they have been playing them for years. And the lines are so compositional and right...Its just so much fun to be on the same stage as these guys.

2007.05.09 Babylon Club, Istanbul, Turkey... Just walking around the Grand Bazaar was

2007.03.09 America runs on Dunkin?... Thats the problem!
2007.02.26 Played at "Pianists play for Larry Willis".
Many great pianists played at this benefit for the great LW, whose
house burnt down recently......
Mulgrew Miller was spectacular as was Ran Jia, a Chinese pianist who quite frankly, was a FREAK technically and musically. Stunning. I was dumbfounded! Also loved hearing Armen Donelian, Gerry Allen...
These performances will be released as a CD by Jim luce, who organized
the event. Stay tuned...
2007.02.24 Performed with Elysian Fields at Tonic. Wow.
If you haven't heard their music, please go to
Very inspiring stuff if I may.
2007.02.02 Just back from a stint at Ronnie Scotts in London with the Gary Bartz 4tet. Gary is playing up a storm ....and.... Yes. We wore V for Vendetta masks to open the show. Yes. Gary memorized and recited V's opening spiel. An yes we went to The Old Bailey and were nearly arrested for wearing the masks.... we had a ball..
Will be in Japan now until Jan 10th where we will play at the Cotton Club,
a top notch new Venue run by the Bluenote, Tokyo.
2007.01.17 Billy Harpers Birthday! One of the great Tenor Saxophonists of all time! Recognize!
2007.01.14 I am currently preparing to travel with Gary Bartz and his 4tet to the UK ( JAN 28, 29 30) and then to Japan (Feb 5-9). Vibes master Stefon Harris will join us for the Tokyo dates. looking forward to making music in this way. Gary is all that he seems.
...I am writing new music as part of a fellowship which was awarded to me by the Australian Arts Council. This new music will further explore the endless possibilities of Cuban Bata music and my far flung melodic and harmonic relationships to it.
2007.01.07 Just returned from Dewey Redman's memorial service. Rest in peace Dewey..a true Griot. What a blessing he was. Joshua played a beautiful homage that broke everyones heart. Charlie Haden said "I never heard someone who encompassed so much of his life in his playing, what an honour it is to play here for Dewey".
Dewey once whispered in my ear while i was playing "stretch out.... your not here for the money"...
2007.01.05 I just finished a recording with Steve Magnussen (guit), Julien Wilson(tenor, Jim Black(drums) and Mark Helias (bass). Some excellent compositions by Steve and Julien... and I eagerly await the finished product... when it is relieved of its experimental duties. I will partake in the baking and frying here at Extracelestial studios.
2007.01.01 Happy 7. thats it.I am going to start adding my news here from now on. I will only allow 15 minute allotments of prose though.
2006.12.31-
2006.12.14 Groove Collective has been nominated for a Grammy for best Contemporary Jazz Album. I did co-write 8 of the tracks on the CD. so I am well pleased.
2006.12.09- IRIDIUM W/ JOSH ROSEMAN CONSTELLATIONS: From awkward and surreal elaborations and strategies behind the stinking black curtains of the Tap Bar where we blossomed on watery budwieser fuels
From endless rehearsals comprising a change it if you nail it, nail it if you can’t hang with it architectural approach
From vivid titles and dots that spew inspiration through a tiny hole which many cats before us have managed to either at least locate or else pry open (some wide open)
From spiked drinks and vomit covered merchandise
From bandstands and rent controlled mayhem
From spunky lawyers who filet contenders and allow deep funk to infiltrate the pottery barn
From dipping the pen in Greek company ink
From elbow and feet grease
From entropy battles and hopeless surrender revelations
From one lone dread that buzzed with life on an eastern European band room
Comes;
This sound mattress
this sonic mogadon
this offering (with occasional deep-sea bells)
with love
