Publishing Experience

Ethan Watters has published three nonfiction books and hundreds of magazine articles and essays during his 20 years of writing. He is now offering intensive one-on-one consultations for those intent on getting their work published.

Ten years ago, Ethan co-created the San Francisco Writers' Grotto with writers Po Bronson and Ethan Canin. The Grotto was founded on the belief that writers should not go it alone -- that sharing knowledge and working over drafts with other writers is an essential part of the process. In the past twelve years a steady stream of books, articles, feature films, television series, short stories, poems and essays have had their genesis in the grotto. The Grotto currently has 32 full-time writers and filmmakers.

Ethan has taught creative non-fiction and essay writing at California College of the Arts, UC Berkeley and Stanford Extension. Over the years he has worked closely with dozens of writers to shape their work into publishable form. He also has expertise in honing query letters, finding agents and developing attention-grabbing book proposals.

His most recent book is Urban Tribes: Are Friends the New Family? The movie rights for Urban Tribes are currently optioned by Ira Glass of This American Life and are in development for a feature film by Warner Bros. He has has co-authored two previous books about recovered memory therapy and the mental health profession.

He’s written for dozens of national magazines including The New York Times Magazine, GQ, Esquire, Mens Journal, Spin, Discover, Details and Mother Jones, among others. He has also created radio pieces for Public Radio International’s  This American Life.
