Coyotes, the Full Moon, Mini and Sassy on their Vigil.
Moonbeams awakened me during the night; I am always thrilled when that happens. I began listening to the sounds of utter silence, then made out the faint songs of frogs by the river, Sassy chasing a rabbit in her dream. I love the clarity that comes with pre-dawn, a good time to contemplate, taking inventory, expressing gratitude. Adjusting to life in the country after forty-five years of city living has had its challenges, but when I asked myself, would I like to move back, the answer was an unequivocal no. Come to think of it, and this is BIG, truly a pivotal moment; I feel myself settled in peace and joy.
I have written about my excitement of sharing coyote territory, although I am always leery now when walking Sassy off the leash down to the bay, her instincts are strong,
instantly picking up on coyote scents left behind from their nightly prowling and wants to follow them. Mini had her first swim; Sassy went only up to her belly into the lovely crystal clear water. I was tempted.
The other morning the dogs woke me with ferocious barking, it made me jump out of bed to see what was happening. In the field just below papa and mamma coyote, mamma visibly pregnant, ignoring the dogs barking, slowly trotting by. Is he leading her to their den I thought, feeling trepidations in my heart, will they get safely across the road and into the woods? “Don’t be silly,” the inner voice prompts; it’s the farmers with their guns they have to watch out for, especially once mamma is in the den with pups and papa has to find food.
Last night gifted me with this incredible experience. The gorgeous full moon enticed and a pack of coyotes to howl and yodel, waking me up in the very wee hours of the morning. Imagine my luck, this repeated an hour or so later, now only two howling and yipping outside my bedroom window, perhaps it was mamma and papa. Thrilling, absolutely thrilling. I have heard them many times before, but somehow the full moon added to the drama and my imagination.
The photo of Mini and Sassy was taking during the winter, but it is there favorite coyote and other creature look-out place.
