Seasonal Card

Happy 2009 from the

russian orcas

We wish you the very best for 2009 on behalf of all of us working on the Far East Russia Orca Project to uncover the lives of kosatka, the Russian orca.

  1. In our 2008 season we started new research from Karaginsky Island, off northern Kamchatka, and returned to the Commander Islands for an in-depth season in addition to our 7-year-old camp in Avacha Gulf, southeast Kamchatka.

  2. We found the first matches for three of our best known pods between southeast Kamchatka and the Commander Islands, 600 km away.

  3. We saw our first all white orca - a young calf.

  4. Following the publication of our orca catalogue, we published two new papers further defining the complex acoustic relationships and the fascinating social behaviour of these animals. Copies on request.

Sponsored by WDCS, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, the Humane Society International, Animal Welfare Institute, Klúh Prize, the Rufford Foundation, and the Sacher Trusts.
