Seasonal Card

Happy 2010 from the

russian orcas

We wish you the very best for 2010 on behalf of all of us working on the Far East Russia Orca Project to uncover the lives of kosatka, the Russian orca.

  1. In our 2009 season we continued our research from Karaginsky Island, off northern Kamchatka, and returned to the Commander Islands for an in-depth season in addition to our 8-year-old work based in Avacha Gulf, southeast Kamchatka.

  2. We found new matches for pods between Avacha Gulf and the Commander Islands, 600 km away.

  3. We saw our 2nd all white orca - she seemed to be a matriarch of her pod.

  4. We published the first handbook to Russian marine mammals and three new papers further defining the complex acoustic relationships and the fascinating social behaviour of these animals. Copies on request.

Sponsored by WDCS, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, the Humane Society International, Animal Welfare Institute, Klúh Prize, the Rufford Foundation, and the Sacher Trusts.
