Making Libraries Work--A Collaborative Effort
I came to Emporia State University’s (ESU) library school at SLIM (The School of Library and Information Management) because I liked books, I liked libraries, and I liked helping people. What I didn’t like was my cubicle job in corporate America. It was astounding, wonderful, and unexpected to discover the whole world surrounding libraries and the profession of librarianship.
After reviewing all the work that went into this course of study, it became evident that its lesson, more than anything else, is collaborate or die. I would not have made it through the SLIM program without a little help from my friends. Similarly, libraries transitioning to the social, political, and technical world of the future must help one another in order to survive and thrive.
Through collaboration, we serve each other and help to solve human problems.
“The librarian of today, and it will be true still more of the librarians of tomorrow, are not fiery dragons interposed between the people and the books. They are useful public servants, who manage libraries in the interest of the public... Many still think that a great reader, or a writer of books, will make an excellent librarian. This is pure fallacy.”
— Sir William Osler, 1917
