A description of Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga from Emily:

I teach from the yoga sequence developed by Baron Baptiste, who studied Raja, Ashtanga, Iyengar and Bikram styles before creating his own vinyasa (flow) style which moves heat energy through the body to cleanse, rejuvenate and relax the body and mind. This complete practice is very accessible to every age, body-type, gender, experience level and physical capacity. I approach each yoga practice I teach organically, working with the individualized needs of each student and adapting the postures and approach as deemed necessary in each moment. The benefits of stretching, strengthening, detoxification, breath-work, relaxation and meditation that I (and many, many others) have experienced through this specific practice has inspired me to want to pass it on and teach it to others.

The best way I would describe my personal experience during the practice of vinaysa yoga is the integration of a continuous sequence of breath with a seamless stream of movement, or a linking of every posture in the practice through the use of breath. There is long holding of certain postures, especially those that focus on opening of the hips and lengthening of the hamstrings, but there is also a cardiovascular, moderately paced aspect to the practice. The sun salutation series can be repeated until the heart rate is raised and there are other sections like this so the health benefits of cardiovascular exercise can be realized through the yoga practice. Focus on meditation through breath, movement, concentration and the opening of the heart are integrated from the other more traditional forms of yoga.

Since beginning to teach in Hocking Hills, I have adapted the practice somewhat to a gentler and more beginner-friendly sequence for my ever-changing student base and outdoor environment.

A description of Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga from an interview with Baron Baptise in Yoga Journal magazine:

YJ: I’ve heard your style described a lot by others, but how would you describe it?

BB: At the foundation, for me practice is 20 percent mechanics and 80 percent spiritual psychology. As Buddha said, “Everything is mind.” Rigid routines don’t really work well for me. I like fluid practice instead. My style is based on being safe and opening the body from a place that is protecting the joint system. I do a lot of creative sequencing, and I teach people my philosphy, “To thine own self be true.” You intuitively know what is right. I know in my own life when I doubt my intuition, it gets me in trouble. We all have a teacher within, and if you are really “in the now,” you’ll know when to push, when to surrender, and when to rest.
