Can you believe it’s almost April? Senior Spring is always something I get nostalgic for...It’s crazy to think that two years ago to this day, I was still up at Brown (fat...) toiling away. I was going through some old files on my laptop and came across a few things I’ve decided to start incorporating, on occasion, into the blog...
Confession: I saved almost every AIM conversation I ever had with anyone.
I knew, early on, that my career was going to involve the chronicling of lives and lifestyles of my generation. That doesn’t mean, by the way, that I intend to violate the privacy of the people with whom I conversed (identities are always protected and no conversation which I think reveals the participant gets published). This is one of many conversations I had with friends from Brown about entry-level career opportunities in Manhattan. Enjoy (it really doesn’t get any better than this...actually it does...i have hundreds of pages of conversations just like this I’ll feed out over time..):
EMILYBRILL: why dont u apply for a job at t&c [Town and Country]?
MYFRIEND (brown guy): i don't know what i would do there
EMILYBRILL: editorial assistant?
MYFRIEND: except hangout with people from greenwich and get paid poverty level wages to photograph hermes beach towels
[several lines later...had to delete some stuff:)]:
EMILYBRILL: maybe u should work for ivywise:-)
MYFRIEND: right?
MYFRIEND: they pay well but how embarrassing would that be
EMILYBRILL: yeah
MYFRIEND: like it really matters where your dumb kid goes to kindergarten
MYFRIEND: because i went to all the right schools and now i'm tutoring park avenue brats with their SSATS
EMILYBRILL: let's just both not get jobs and write books instead
MYFRIEND: ok
EMILYBRILL: or start our own company
MYFRIEND: i think it would be cheaper to travel through asia and south america than to make 24000 and live in new york city
MYFRIEND: like i honestly think that
EMILYBRILL: um actually good point
EMILYBRILL: god I wish my parents understood that
There’s plenty more where that came from, but I’d like to inform readers that for the next several days, this misfit will need to cut back significantly on her writing or stop entirely (more likely, the latter). Believe me, this is for the best and it won’t be long before I’m posting again. I can’t wait to show you what I’ve been up to and I appreciate your patience.
Yours Truly,
E
