Drunk Driving and the Mexican Bike Race
In Jacksonville Florida and around the world, bicyclists take to the roads to enjoy
their sport and hobby. Some ride alone. Some ride in groups. When there is a bicycle race, roads are typically cleared and fans line the streets to cheer on the bicycle racers. In Monterrey Mexico, a bicycle race went from a ride through the streets to tragedy. Apparently, a drunk driver hit the roads without slowing for a large group of bicycle riders. Apparently, the drunk driver fell asleep at the wheel. One cyclist died and many others were injured as a result of the drunk driver’s carelessness. The accident was captured in the above amazing photograph. Seeing is believing for this photograph. It almost does not look real with the riders and bicycles in mid air. Unfortunately, for the bicycle racers and families, the photograph was real. While the accident was a freak one statistically, it does help drive home the importance of sharing the road with and not taking the road from bicycle riders. This is especially true for children on bicycles. Children do not always have good judgment or coordination when riding a bicycle. Slow down and be on the look out for small bicycles and small children.
As for the Monterrey Mexico incident, it also shows the importance of having a designated driver, getting a cab, or just sleeping it off. The next time that you are in Mexico - you may want to skip the bicycle race, do your best to stay away from drunk drivers, and avoid being a drunk driver yourself.
