Captain John Quincy adams house

The Best House in the Best Neighborhood
In one of the Best Towns
In the Country if not the World!
A once in a lifetime opportunity!  This beautiful Queen Anne Victorian was built in 1887 when Washington was still part of the frontier prior to becoming a state.  It was owned by Captain john Quincy Adams, who was a direct descendent of the Presidential Adams family.  He was a sea captain and a veteran of the Civil War.  Later the home was owned by Charles Koons who was the first Lieutenant Governor of the state of Washington and Mayor of Port Townsend for three terms.

This is only the second time on the market in over 45 years!

There is nearly 4,000 square feet of living space with four large bedrooms, one of which is a five room master suite, 4.5 baths, 5 gas fireplaces, parlor, dining room, study, large kitchen, working kitchen, laundry, and basement.  Unlike most Victorian era homes which had a lot of smaller rooms to accommodate their large families, this home was built with fewer rooms but more spacious.  It has the comfort level of a more modern home but with all the character ( 10’ - 12’ ceilings, etc. ) of a historic home.
The house sits on a 18,000 sq. foot lot with beautiful mature gardens, a very large garage/workshop ( 1008 sq. ft. ) and spectacular hand wrought iron gates and fence from the 3rd quarter of the Nineteenth Century Prague.  The beautiful brick that has been used for pathways, foundation, pillars, and walls is also over one hundred years old.
The garage was built in the early 1960’s by the former owner using massive old growth beams and welded bracketing.  Included is a conceptual drawing of a proposed gothic carriage house which would incorporate an 800 sq. ft. apartment and tower which would have amazing views of the water and town.
Over the past six years, 95% of the exterior of the house has been stripped down to the original old growth Douglas Fir siding.  It was then primed and painted using only the best materials.  The main color of the house was found on one of the beautiful Victorians in Savannah, Georgia and finished with period trim colors of the same era.  It has an understated elegance which exemplifies a warm and very inviting feel.
The home is located in the heart of the Historic Uptown District and just minutes walk to local shops, restaurants, downtown, Chetzemoka Park and the beach.  Port Townsend is situated on the tip of the Olympic Peninsula where the Strait of San Juan de Fuca meets the beautiful Puget Sound, surrounded by the majestic Cascade mountain range and the Olympic National Park which acts as a rain shadow with only 17” of annual rainfall.  The world renowned San Juan Islands are only a short boat ride away.
Port Townsend is also well known for its wooden boat restoration facilities and is one of only three Victorian Seaports on the National Historic Register.  It constantly has top performers, musicians, artists, and writers gathering from around the world ( P T Film Festival, Centrum, Olympic Music Festival, etc. ).  It is only a 2 hour drive from Seattle, 2.5 from Victoria, 3.5 to Vancouver BC and 4 hours from Portland, OR.
